Upper Endoscopy

So, I got all my scripts for my pre-op testing today and the only one I'm worried about is the Upper Endoscopy. Are these bad? Do you feel anything? Does it hurt afterwards? How long does it take? & Are there any complications that can occur with it? Thanks for any information!

Mine was done under twilight anesthesia and I didn't feel a thing, and came out of it feeling just fine. It was a breeze. Nothing to worry about. Best of luck to you.

I just had one done a few weeks ago.  Of course I have a gag reflex if I can't control what is going down my throat.  I had the doctor laughing at that one.

I could hear the nurse vagely saying its almost done hon just a few more minutes.  She felt bad I was gagging, but it could have been worse.  It was quick and pretty much painless.  I did have a slight sore throat for a few days, but that was about it.  Get something nice and cold to drink afterwards and some cough drops to coat your throat.

It took only about 15-20 mintues.  They did state that there could be bleeding so jus****ch for coffee ground like stuff.  They will go over any and all complications.

I was knocked out, didn't feel a thing, and had no pain or anything afterwards. It's like I had a nice nap and woke up feeling great. I honestly don't remember anything about the procedure itself. I do remember saying "Wow, we're done already??"

I have a VERY active gag reflex and my biggest worry was that I'd gag and freak out. It wasn't even as issue. Whew!!

You'll have to ask your doc about possible complications. ( I can't remember what they were anyway. ) They should explain everything having to do with your endoscopy to you anyway. Go armed with a list of any questions you have for them.

Hope yours goes as easily as mine did!

easy peasy, under twilight anesthesia. Woke up and went home. there was absolutely no pain whatsoever. I had mine done at the same time I had my 50 year of age colonoscopy.

I was worried too...but it was fine. It was over and done from start to finish in like 30 minutes. I had to go into the hospital for a second test which was an upper endoscopic ultrasound. That one was a little longer but still fine. Just grab some sugar free cough drops before hand...your throat can get scratchy afterwards.

Doesn't take long...I had one done 4 days after surgery and it was quick and painless. A little bit of a scratchy throat was all I felt.

Good luck

Thank you for all your responses. I'm worried that I'm going to feel it going down and be sitting there gagging the whole time. I just want to be completely knocked out and not feel anything.
