A question for some of the vets

I am three months out and have only recently been able to tolerate protien shakes, but now that I have found one that works well for me I was curious if it was ok to have a half slice of string cheese when I have my shake or would that count as eating and drinking at the same time?

angel,

Protein shakes are Liquids and string cheese is a solid/soft food.  It is NOT a good idea to eat them together.  I place an old fashion kitchen timer next to me after

I eat.  I set it for 30 minutes and WORK REAL HARD to wait to drink.  It hurts if you drink too soon after eating.  Your pouch is still healing and adhering to a strict

protocol is paramount to success in the early days.  I still battle my old habit to drink when eating.  It's very hard.  If I get desperate-I simply...eeek...take a wee bit

of water-wet my mouth/lips-n' YUP you guessed it-I spit it out.  Everyone experiences food taste changes, thirst/drinking issues, counting grams, etc.  You'll figure out how to navigate yours.

We're all here if you need support.  Just remember that everyone's experience is different.  That's why journaling is so necessary IMO.

Message me if you would like. Happy to share my experience with a newbie...*wink*

At three months, you are healed. The reason for not drinking during or after eating is that you will wash the food out of your pouch. This will allow you to eat more at a sitting, or make it so you won't get that full feeling that will keep you satisfied. If you don't feel satisfied, you will eat more or more often.

I think you will be happier if you have your protein shake by itself, and save the cheese to have as a snack. You will be more satisfied throughout the course of the day.

You will need to have them separately since they fall in different food categories one is a solid the other is a liquid. One you eat; the other you drink. Hope this helps.

Yes, that would be eating and drinking at the same time.

I'm 5 years post RNY and I agree with the others.  Don't drink and eat at the same time.  I wait one hour after eating because I experience nausea and it is usually easing after one hour.

String cheese is an excellent snack and also good to carry in your purse in case you are late for a meal or need something to eat.
