Losing my hair

Hi Angel,

I'm with you girl; I just had surgery recently 3/13 & am just now starting to lose.  I too have thick wavy hair that I keep long.  I always shed a lot of it in the summer anyway & lost a LOT before finding out my thyroid was out of whack about 3 years ago.  But we will probably all lose some after WLS.  How I'm dealing & how I've dealt in the past; because I was losing a quart size baggie full with each wash & actually took it to show my Doc once-this was prior to them figuring out my thyroid was sluggish...buy a drain strain cover for your shower or you'll be pulling out hair wads from the drain with a wire coat hanger constantly which is yucky.  Having curly hair you probably don't need to wash you hair as often so DON'T...unless it's just plain gross leave it alone or use dry spray shampoo; this brand has been easy for me to find at most stores http://www.tresemme.com/product/category/332761/dry?gclid=****74it6r4CFRQmMgodigUAXQ&gclsrc=aw.ds it's like spray powder & you will have to bru**** through but if your hair isn't dirty just don't wa****  You can also put some baby powder on your hands & rub on your scalp on no wash days if you're feeling greasy.  Try to only bru**** once a day.  I can just touch mine now & it falls out.  I've been taking biotin for years-some folks say it doesn't help but I'd rather take it than not.  There are several hair skin & nail formulas in the Vitamin section of stores so it's worth a try I've been taking it for I think 3 years on a daily basis.  Don't bleach your hair; sound like you already love yours like it is but don't have it bleached; I did that for years & it broke off; this was in my 20's early 30's.  If you color boxed color is fine & I've found this brand actually makes my hair feel healthy & doesn't have that nasty hair color smell http://www.garnierusa.com/_en/_us/our_products/trade8-garnie r.aspx?tpcode=OUR_PRODUCTS%5EPRD_HAIRCOLOR%5ETRD_HAIRCOLOR Try using http://www.infusium23.com/ shampoo & conditioner but only cream condition once a week; I say this because with my experience more of my hair falls out when I condition on the days you don't deep condition use the spray in/leave in conditioner which will also help you brush through your hair.  You don't have to chop all your hair off but do keep it trimmed it will look healthier.  Don't dry your hair let it air dry & don't use a lot of styling products & hot tools look for curly hair products that don't have alcohol in them & use as little hair spray as you have to if this is a product you use.

Now I'm NOT a hairdresser just a lady trying to keep my long hair that my husband loves; so take what I type just as just my personal experience.  I'm sure their are salon products that work better than those I've mentioned above but these products have been amazing for me & I've tried lots & lots of them throughout the years.  I'm sorry my reply is so long but I'm right there with you hang in there it's just a temporary thing it will stop & just think most people won't even notice your hair but will notice how much weight you're losing.  Also be sure to keep the brush roll on your vacuum cleaner cleaned out too cause it's prob. gonna be full of hair too.  Best of luck & this will pass.

Thank you everyone for letting me know I'm not alone....

the shared advice helps but hearing that all of us go through similar things makes the biggest difference

My nutritionist told us in group that you can do all the right things and still possibly lose your hair, even if you keep up on your protein, take a biotin supplement, etc.  It's just different for everyone.  However, I have heard from everyone that it happens to that it does come back.  It's just another weird, suckie side effect of the surgery.
