6 days out of surgery and still dealing with a ton of pain.

My Roux-en-Y surgery was last monday. Apparently it took 5 hours instead of the usual 3 because of some difficulties maneuvering around scar tissue left by a hernia operation in the past. I'm feeling sorry for myself and really impatient to finally get some relief. It's been brutal, man. Standing...lying down...all around the incisions. I've been forcing myself to walk as much as possible and to follow all the post op instruction. There's been a tiny amount of improvement each day, but I'm just wondering, have there been others who've experienced the same sort of slow recovery? Would love to get some input.

I'm twelve days out. the first few days weren't so bad with the help of heavy narcotics but days 5 6 and 7 were brutal.  thankfully I felt just a little better each day.  day 10 was my first "ok. I can handle this" day.  I'm feeling much better, I'm not hunched when I walk and sleeping is finally manageable.

just sip water, rest and walk.  it will get better.

Everyone's pain tolerance is different, but I will say, I had a hernia fixed at the same time as my RNY.  THAT was the most painful part of my recovery.  Anyhow, soon this will be a distant memory outweighed (pun intended) by all the benefits.

Your post is gold to me!  Thank you!!!!

I was wondering why I felt like my recovery was a bit slower than others reported - I completely forgot about my hernia fix... and honestly it never even occurred to me that that might add a little time to my healing.  I'm such an idiot.

My surgery was in March and I took a good two weeks to feel somewhat comfortable and four weeks to be totally pain free.  I'm usually a fast recoverer so I was disappointed to say the least that my recovery seemed slow.  Your body heals at its own rate, but my guess is that each week will be better and before long you will feel great!

I assume you are taking your pain meds as prescribed?  If the pain is really bad even with the meds, I would call your surgeon.

Take your pain meds!  You don't get any big gold stars for suffering.

Hey Jenny, We seem to be surgery date twins. It took them under 2 hours to do mine. I really and truly understand how you are feeling. I even was up and walking the day of my surgery. I get up several times a date to walk and to sit up. I do not sleep laying down...heck no! I can feel the real need for my pain meds...meaning it gets real bad for me about an hour before it is time to take them. I am not saying that I haven't seen some improvement yesterday and today...I have...it just is slower than I thought and I hurt way more than I thought I would. I have had gallbladder removal and a hysterectomy in the past. Don't remember it being being like this. I just keep telling myself to it time.

Thanks for sharing, TracyLynn...

Pretty cool that we had the same surgery date. It does seem that time is the answer, but I'm impatient. I will say that each day is a tiny little eensy bit better than the last. I hope the same continues for you.
