Flaxseed oil capsules

Kelly:  I read you take flaxseed oil capsules in the winter for dry skin.  Could I ask what brand, the dosage, do you take them everyday and is soft gel acceptable.  I found many choices on Amazon and am confused as usual. My skin is dry now.  I moisturize daily with CeraVe and Eucerin.  Works pretty well but I thought I would inquire about the capsules.  I thought we did not absorb oils well.  Could you steer me straight please.

Flaxseed oil only comes in soft gels, I believe.  Since it's oil, you can't get it in a dry form.  We do malabsorb fats, which means we don't absorb them real well, but we absorb some of them.  So you would absorb some of the flaxseed oil, just not all of it.

I get whatever brand I find cheap at the drug store.  I just take a couple a day.  I don't think it's necessary to be real particular with the dose.  Unless you take a HUGE number of them (which I don't recommend) you aren't going to overdose on them or anything.

Nature made has 1000 mg, 100 capsule bottle for $7 amazon prime.  So I would just take one or two a day?  And they really help?  Logically I knew since it was an oil it would have to be oil in the capsule.  Just wanted to verify.  I have fouled up so many times.  Now I am never afraid to ask the stupid question.    Thanks for answering me so quickly. I love reading your blog by the way.

Yeah, I'd probably take two a day.  Actually, if you look at the serving size, it might be two capsules = 1000 mg.

They really help me.  I can't promise it will help you.  It certainly won't hurt anything.  It's got all those good omega 3 fatty acids which are good for your heart and your brain, so even if it doesn't help the dry skin, it's good for you.  And it's cheap so it's definitely worth trying.  But yeah, I start taking them in the fall, whenever my skin starts getting dry and itchy and take them until spring and I notice a big difference.  Might take a week or two to see a difference though.  It's not like you'll take the first dose and suddenly dry skin goes away.

It wasn't a stupid question.  It was a logical question since we hear all the time we need dry vitamins, not vitamins in oil.  Even with vitamins, we will absorb some of them in oil.  Just not the full amount we take.  and with some vitamins, we want to be a lot more precise about the dose we're getting, and since we don't know how much we will absorb of a vitamin in oil, it just makes sense to take a dry form so we know what we are actually getting.

And I'm glad you like my blog.

As an Esthetician I have a few questions for you, are you drinking enough water? You skin will show dehydration much quicker then the rest of our bodies. What type of soap/face wash are you using? that might be drying you out. You can also add in healthy fats to your diet that will help. When you say your skin is dry, what parts? all of your skin? or just patches?

Really all over dry.  My face ... I have had two microderm abrasion treatments this year followed by a hydrating facial and I dont know what else she did.  Minerals, hot mist etc.  It took 1 1/2 hours and felt so good.  I bought her moisturizer.  I also bought an Olay rotating scrubbie brush thing and the cleanser that goes with it.  She said to use it only once a week and moisturize.  So I do.  I wash my face with the mildest soap Clinique makes every morning and night followed with moisturizer.  I use either CereVe or Eucerin on arms and legs.  I like the CereVe best as it soaks in faster.  Eucerin is heavy.  I drink probably on average 72 os fluids daily ... Coffee, tea, protein drink made with 16 oz water etc.  i am 67 so maybe old age is creeping in.  In the winter it seems worse.  The facials are a luxury.  My skin is so smooth after.  And the Olay brush is slowly sanding things down too.    I am a project for me!  Any other suggestions would be appreciates.  I do stick with fat free cottage cheese, cheeses, yogurt etc.

CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser/CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser for Dry to Normal Skin are both a really good cleanser to use for dry skin. Clinique can be very drying on the skin even being the mildest soap, because well its soap.

L'Oreal Age Perfect Hydra Nutrition Glow Renewal Facial Oil is a good step to add before you moisturize.

Also make sure your using a good sunscreen or everything else you do doesnt really matter, honestly. As far as your body, try using a body oil. I personally use Neutrogena Body oil in light sesame after my shower, but before I dry off. I put it all over my body while still wet in the shower, then just wrap a towel around me while I finish off my skin care. I just let it dry naturally. Your body wash might be drying you out some.

Depending on the money you want to spend, here is a not as cheap option. I love the stuff and it really is great for the skin. paulas choice

The lady who did my facials also recommended washing with a facial sponge.  She promptly sold me two for $8.00!  Have any thoughts on that?  I am checking on your suggestions.  And HALAS.  Thanks for your time in responding.  It is bothering me.  This facial lady actually said my face was suffocating.  Scaly so the moisturizer couldn't  absorb properly.  Gasp!  She used her industrial machine for the first derma abrasion.  The second time I was on the regular machine so some progress.  Sigh!  But all that is pretty expensive.
