How fast does the weight come off after RNY?

Thank you guys. I'm not worried about losing it really fast. I really want to take it slow an really build muscle while I lose the fat. I've been fat my whole life so the thought of not is just crazy to me lol To go from living to eat to eating to live. Whole new concept

I mirror your stats at 5'10 but my surgeon has a goal wt of 145-which I think impossible! I did two weeks of liquids losing 20 lbs with 60-65 G protein daily. I have lost an additional 10 lbs this first week post-op. I am anticipating this will drastically slow!  I am on liquids another week or so.

145 sounds completely unattainable and undesirable to me. I would think that would look sickly. Are you really tired after surgery or just go back to normal after the anesthesia wears off?

I just had RNY on 9/15/2014 and the two weeks after surgery, I felt great. I was walking 1 1/2 miles a day. Week 3, all the sudden, I had no energy, I was so weak, I felt nauseaus and ended up coming back out of work for 2 more weeks. I was put on supplements such as iron, vitamin D and a b-complex. With the supplements and increasing my caloric intake, I felt some better. I still find myself needing a nap after work some days, but I'm having more energy now and it's continuing to increase. Good luck to you!

I'm 4'11" - my doctors say that 100-115 is completely attainable. I think that'd look horrible on me. I'm aiming for 135 on the low side because even that seems ridiculous!

It is smart to let your body go 10, 20, or even 30 pounds under your ideal weight.  It is normal to have a bounce-back regain about two years out.

True maintenance starts after that readjustment period. Many people look too skinny during year 2, but it is very rare to be too skinny after year 3.

Your surgeon is wise.

I am 5'11 and I am thinking 165-170 is a good goal if I can get there.  179 is the top of 'normal' for my height. So 160 doesn't sound totally unrealistic. I don't think you can really decide until you get closer. It's just a number, not even real when you still have a lot to lose. Weight loss rate is very variable, so don't try to compare. I had read you can lose 20-40 pounds the first month. Since I had a high BMI- over 50+ - I figured I'd be a quick loser, nope. After a week I went into a 3 1/2 week stall. I know I only lost 14 pounds the first month. You just have to keep moving forward and doing what you are supposed to do. Good Luck!

I have never been thin - have you? I used to think I would look too thin if I made it to goal. Once I got there, it really isn't as small as you might think.  We have gotten used to ourselves as a women of size.  I would just take it pound by pound. 145 at 5'10 is still a BMI of 20 and not considered underweight.

It took me 14 months to get down to 142, then I had plastics and stopped exercising. I was 149 this morning. I bounce around. I am just healing up my last area in my tummy tuck and plan to get back to the gym.

Like the others said - it's not a race ... doesn't matter how fast you get there!!  Good luck to you.
