I want a bypass but family says sleeve HELP!
Get the surgery that is right for you. With diabetes, get RNY. The longer you put it off, the less chance that your diabetes will go into remission. Let your family do what they want, but don't let them talk you out of your RNY.
You are the one who will live with the surgery and will be so unhappy if the diabetes does not go into remission with the sleeve. You will always wonder if the RNY would have worked for you. Don't do that to yourself.
I worried about how I would feel with my intestines rerouted. After surgery I realized that I never knew how my intestines were routed before and did not know any difference when they were changed.
I was seven years out in October, have lost all the excess weight and kept it off. I have had no complications or side effects.
The sleeve is the popular choice now for people doing internet research. It is popular because it is cheaper an easier for the doctors to do. With the sleeve you only lose weight by cutting calories. With RNY you eat and the food is not all absorbed. That advantage lasts for about two years and gives you an extra boost of weight loss while you learn how to eat properly to maintain your weight loss for life.
Nobody dies from malnourishment after RNY. The body stops losing when it is ready. In truth, the last 10 pounds or so can be just as hard with RNY as it is with Weigh****chers

Real life begins where your comfort zone ends
EXACTLY! Some people freak out and say they won't do RNY because they are scared they will have dumping (not everyone has it). I personally look like it is a great reminder tool! I haven't dumped really (just felt a bit ill after bad choices), but I consider the chance of dumping as another tool in my tool box to help keep me behaving.
Good luck with your choice! You do need to really discuss with your surgeon and understand why he prefers one surgery over the other FOR YOU! What matters is your body and how the expert believes you will have the best success.
You know what is best for you - others, including family will not have to live with your choice. I had the Band in 2006 as well and I have been very happy with my revision to RNY. Really - if restrction only procedures worked for all of us then we would have been successful with the Band and no one would need the DS after a VSG. Sometimes restriction only just isn't enough. Living with RNY has been far easier than my Banded life. I would do it over again every year if I had to. Really.
As far as anti-inflammatories go and the like - I haven't taken them in over 20 years because they give me peptic ulcers quite easily for some reason. My husband and one of my sons is seriously allergic to NSAIDS and codeine. It sucks sometimes because it is dangerous for them if they are given them by mistake - but other options exisit! You learn to deal. It can be a non-issue - not for everyone, but defintitley when it isn't an option you find others.
I think you should feel confident in your choice and not let fear make the choice for you. There are lots of us on OH who are happy with their individual revision choice - I hope they chime in here so you can get to know them. Good luck with your journey. I used to be an Oregon Duck.....!

You're 50 yrs old and certainly old enough to make your own decision. And to tell your "well meaning" family that you've got this.
If you want RNY then get it - I'm sure you've done your research. Ihad mine 14 yrs ago and I'm certainly not "malnourished" under weight, deficient in vitamins of anything else and I'm 57 yrs old. I can run circles around most people, have no complications from my surgery or health issues. You're going to have to hurt their feelings - some people don't seem to get it any other way. "My doctor and I have made the decision that's right for my health and for me" thank you for your concern but I'll be fine. I've done my research too".
Your diabetes should be better or non existent after surgery, the fibro better, and the other things should get a lot better the more weight you lose. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I feel good, I look good, I eat good and never feel deprived. this surgery is a tool, as you've learned. You can get there and you'll love it.
