Hi, all I am 5'2" or 5'3" depending on who measures me. lol  I'm 45 weight 187.  I have high blood pressure for about 5 years now, my knees hurt all the time, I have heart burn so bad some times I feel like I'm having a heart attack.  I REALLY want and need to lose weight.

I've been reading through some of the post and looking at peoples starting weight. I don't see anyone under 200 pounds that has had the surgery.  Is there anyone here I just haven't seen?  Or know if would I qualify for it?

I'm so sick of being fat. I'm missing on so much in life because I won't do it because I am too fat! UGH

I was 176 when my doctor recommended RNY.  Got up to 207 and was 195 when I was operated on.

If you are using insurance this will depend on its terms. Most insurance companies have a minimum bmi for people who are without any other medical problems and a lower one for those who do. Each insurance although similar has its own guidelines. You will need to do research with yours.

I was a similar height and was a similar weight the day of surgery. I had a BMI of 33.8 when I attended the seminar for the surgery and had a BMI of 35.1 day of consult. They recommend surgery for me due to severe knee issues and acid reflux. I was 181 on day of surgery after preop diet. I used to tease the surgeon that it was the first time in my adult life that I was tempted to wear 15 pounds of hidden weights. The only consideration I had was whether the surgery would be good for me or not I wouldn't have had ins coverage either way. I paid out of pocket which was very stressful and still is. I know there are places in like Vegas and such that often offer better rates on surgery or I have read about some self pays having the surgery down in Mexico. The one thing you do need to remember is that as a "lightweight" you will not lose at the same rate as someone heavier. Possibly at the same percentage but no where near pound for pound. That was really discouraging for me right at first until I realized I was right on track percentage wise. I am just shy of a year out and ten pounds under what my PCP and surgeon wanted as my goal and around 15 pounds from my lowest adult weight which I have set as my next goal to allow a few pounds in case of bounce back weight once malabsorbtion stops. If you have any other questions feel free to IM me. I'm often on here since I find reading the posts helps keep me motivated even if I don't post anything myself all that often. The people here are really supportive and can be a huge resource. I hope your journey is smooth from here on out. Best of luck to you.

it can be done.

I was around 198 when I met my surgeon the first time. I had to lose 10 percent of my weight , and I was 178 when I had my surgery. I was 4'10.5" when I had my surgery, but I've lost half an inch.

I've lost over 200 pounds and still weigh over 200 pounds.  Things could be worse!

Thanks y'all!  I would not do it if insurance doesn't pay.  We are retired military and I have to get base doc to approve me to go see a doc off base for surgery.  I think I'm going to call and and get an appt and see what they say.

I just can't do this on my own!

I am glad you posted this question. While I haven't had surgery yet and I am still contemplating which surgery to have I still wonder if anyone is small as me has had RNY. I am about 4' 11.5" and weight 176 probably more like pushing 180. My highest weight about four years ago was 187. My BMI is right at 35. I have high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. My GI doc said if I don't take off the weight and keep it off then 10-15 years and I will have cirrhosis of the liver. I just can't get past a weight ideal enough to make my body happy with itself.  I hope if I have surgery that I will be able to reverse those conditions as well as my back pain and feet pain! I know my weight doesn't help with those things.
