You're not crazy.  My surgeon doesn't do goal weights either for exactly that reason.

I do think it is incredibly rude for people to ask you what your goal weight is. I would ask them what theirs is and how much they weigh now and see what they say to that.

No one ever asked me my goal weight. It is personal. I share it here but otherwise it is no one's business.

I did set a goal and have revised it a couple of times. When my body said that is the right place I was good with that. But having that number now helps keep me on track with maintaining the loss. My doc did give me a weight based on what he considered successful 65% of excess weight which was still in obese Bmi range. Now at 131 to 133 range. At 133 I am even more careful. Still weigh and measure everything. Just know one pound can lead to more. Maybe not technically a goal weight but more of a self monitoring system.

My surgery date is 2/16/15 and my goal is to weigh less than 200 lbs.  My surgeon tells me to be realistic with weight loss expectations as I am over 45 years old.  With RYN I can expect to loose 50%-80% of my excess weight.  I really want to reach a healthy weight but do not want to set myself up for disappointment.  I would love to reach 140 lbs!

I turned 65 in August. Started out at 281, lost to 229 preoperative which took longer than I expected. Extra tests and delays getting necessary appointments. Planned on a January date ended up end of July 2013. Don't psych yourself out and follow your plan. You might end up being really surprised at where you might end up.

There is a lot of psychology around goal setting too.  I do think you should have a physical goal. Everyone should -- even if your goal is to maintain your current weight.

You goal could be run a mile, lose 50 pounds by spring break, normal BMI, under 200, a size 10, weigh less than you did for XXX - my husband wants to be under 250 pounds so he can ride a horse at this resort we want to go to. That is above his ideal weight but still a goal.  Just as long as it is measurable and attainable!!

You will find that people have no reservations about asking you all kinds of invasive and inappropriate questions.

Good luck!!

My goal was more clothes size than actual weight.  I wanted to be size 12 or below, not bigger than large,

I got my wish and then some,  Still kipping my goal. But since i have large frame, and muscles, ny BMI is between 25-30... One time it got above 30 (still size 8-12), and my PCP food not like that, so i dropped 15lbs duo fat and plan to get the rest 5 to be gone.

A goal is a wish with a date attached to it.  If you have a goal weight then you also need to have a date when you are going to reach your goal.  Without setting a goal you are setting yourself up for failure.

To be successful at weight loss or in any endeavor, it is essential to have a goal and a timeline to reach that goal.
