But will they keep it off?  We all know the odds of you keeping it off are much better than those who did it without surgery.  Give them their high horse: we'll take science.

I was really happy to see this article! When I went to my seminar last year, THIS is what they told us about Obesity as a disease. All the years of yo-yo dieting had actually modified my body's chemistry and the benefit of RNY surgery is that if you use it and follow the plan, it re-sets the chemical switch between the stomach and the brain. It puts the hormone and chemical communication system back on track ( I liken this to using a defibrillator on a heart that's beating out of sync) and allows your body to revert back to it's default setting so the metabolism runs the way it was originally intended. I was told just what was said in the article, years of diets and weight gain and loss due to bad nutrition, binges at one point and sever calorie restrictions at another eventually cause the body to modify the metabolism as it adapts and attempts to survive what it's sure is going to be a continuation of previous experiences. It's kind of like muscle memory only it's the other side of the page. It was finally having someone explain to my WHY all those hours in the gym and 1200 calorie diets weren't working that made me realize that my obesity was a disease and surgery was right for me. Thanks so much for posting the link to this article. I copied it to my computer and want to print a copy so I can share it with people who are interested. I've been saying to my friends and family all along, that I will never be a normal thin person, I will be always be a recovering fat person.
