Topic: RE: Running in Winter...AND
For general cold-running tips, go to the message boards at www.coolrunning.com, I have found the folks there to be an invaluable resource. We rarely get snow here, so it is not really an issue for me. For cold, it's a matter of layering.
On the skin issue, I used spandex tights (shorts during summer, long during the winter). They keep things in place.

I'm a beginning runner. Does anyone have some suggestions for running in the cold and snow? I live in Utah....would love any idea's that some of you have.
Also......this is gross, but i have some saggy skin on my tummy plus some fat still. Does anyone have any idea's so my tummy doesn't slap my legs when i run? I've thought about a girdle....but...
Would love some idea's!!!

WOW!! Repeat that about a hundred times over! WOW! How inspiring you are! Thanks so much for sharing your experience and victories! You have accomplished so much!
I just reached goal and this Sunday I am doing my second triathlon - sprint distance. It's been an awesome experience training for the tris. I *love* swimming and really enjoy biking but running... well, this is how I put it.. "I don't like running ~ YET!" It's not really my forte, but I have decided to do a 1/2 marathon in November just to tell 'running' who is boss! Perhaps I will grow to love it as much as swimming! Your story encourages me that I just might! Next year I'm going for an olympic distance tri.
I'm glad I found this forum. I'm hoping to dig up some infomration on nutrition for the WLS athlete.
Take care,
Nancy

Jeff Galloway? He has a website, and also a seperate forum at www.coolrunning.com. Many runners take exception to Gallowalking (as it is called) as sometimes in a race they suddenly start walking right in front of you. Personally, I think there is some merit to the concept.

Tek,
I think there is definitely a difference in the way we use our muscles when running and walking. I've been doing some reading lately on running and one training technique is run/walk/run. The author was claiming that some people might be able to do longer distances because of the way the muscles are used differently when we walk versus run. It seems to me that you need to get to the mall more - lol!
Seriously though, while I am not advanced enough with my running to note the type of comparison you have here, I have noticed that walking at a good pace is easier than the strolling/meandering type of walk you might do at the mall.
Good question.

Ok, this is not a which is better post, Runners already know that
It's more of an odd observation...
My normal run each day is 9+ miles. My LSD (Long Slow Distance) is 18-22 depending on where I am in my training. I run at 4:30-5:00am, then then carry on with the rest of my day.
We often go for walks on weekends or in the evening after work. The walks actually take more out of me than when I run. I mean, its harder to walk a mall, or walk a 4-5 miles on the strip than to do my morning runs. It hurts my knees more, it hurts my feet more.
What is different? I typically wear the same shoes, so I am getting the same support. Although, recently I have changed to Nike Free for running, which theoretically have LESS support than the New Balance 991's I wore before (i have about 8 pairs that are 'worn out' for running, but fine for walking).
I think it shows that Walking and Running, though similar, are very different creatures.
Any thoughts?

Topic: RE: poll: what are you training for?
Hello my Beloved.
I'm currently not training for anything. Last yr I started the Hal Higdon's 1/2 marathon for Novice as part of my 6mos supervised diet excercise. I am proud to say that in that time I completed 3 5k's, 1 6k(outback run on thxgvng),1 10ml(the pumpkin run on halloween), 1 15k(the RIVER RUN in JAX). That is the largest 15k in country but it's where i live. I am more proud to say that I completed all of these races at my current BMI and I had the will and determination to finish them all. I know marathon season is starting again but I just didn't get started, I was heart broken when the weight didnt come off like i had hoped. Now I should be getting a surgery date soon. After WLS i will start running again. My goal is to complete a marathon and a triathilon someday. I wish you luck on your upcoming races.Be Blessed,
P.S. If you wanna see a pic of me at one of the races I'm in Brightroom.com. Just look under The Outback race on thanksgiving last yr i forget the date but i know it was the 3rd thurs. in Nov. Search by my last name first (LaKeesha Coleman)

Tek,
WOW - I read your profile and if I remember correctly this is your 4th marathon since your surgery! You are really doing fantastic. I hope that the training goes well for you between now and the marathon and that you heal quickly.
I am hoping to run a marathon around this time next year. I am really excited about this goal! It represents so much about this surgery to me -to be able to get out there and do things!

Topic: 2 months until Long Beach Marathon
The Long Beach Marathon is 2 months from today. Long Beach 2004 was my first marathon, and so far, my best time wise. I am hoping to improve this time.
Until this weekend, I was a little worried that I was going to be able to get the necessary training in due to my broken rib. I managed a 14 miler on Sunday in Phoenix while I was visiting my parents, and while the pace wasn't what I would hope for, I could breath.
Today I did an hour on the treadmill at a good pace (for me), and again I am encouraged the marathon will go well.
I am really paying attention to my recovery and training during this month since the San Francisco Marathon (7/31/2005) because I only have a month between the Long Beach Marathon then the Valley of Fire Marathon. Worse, I only have two weeks between Valley of Fire and the New Las Vegas Marathon. I may have to only run the Half at Valley of Fire, we'll see.
