A running group may be a great idea. Check out a local running store for resources and local contacts. When I started, I bought "An Idiot's Guide to Running" and found the information very valuable. There are several beginner running books out there, and I suspect most have the same information. On-Line, I have found www.coolrunning.com very helpful and informative. There are message boards here, particularly the "Newbie Cafe" where beginners can ask basic to complex questions and get help. They have several virtual running groups that check in daily. www.runnersworld.com has some good information. www.jeffgalloway.com is Jeff Galloway's site, the author/promoter of a run/walk program that is useful to many. Good Luck! Tek

Good Job! The way my home and neighborhood are arranged, I have some significant hills no matter what course I choose. Sometimes I hate hills, especially at the end of an LSD when the last 4-5 is up hill and the temp is over 90 on it's way to 100. Uhg. Tek

Topic: First Hill Work Yesterday
Hi there, Did my first Hill work day yesterday. We went up the hill 3 times. I can't believe how much easier it is than I expected. I was in the front half of my running pack, and it just felt so good to be out there attacking that hill. Wishing all love and good training, ~Lara 10/2/05 - first 10 mile run

Lara, Wow - that is a powerful post. Congratulation on getting through the run! It is such a great accomplishment. I know what you mean about the tears of gratitude. I did the Long Island Corporate Challenge on 7/26. I did the 3.5 miles in 52 minutes (walking and jogging). I almost cried coming across the finish line because I have come so far since my surgery. I also beat the time I was hoping to make by 3 minutes! Mary 302/202/1??

I'd love to do the NYC marathon - it has always been a dream of mine. I just signed up for a 10 week running class in Manhattan. It starts in late September and ends with a 10k run in Central Park in December. Mary 302/202/1??

Topic: RE: Poll: On your Running days how do you eat?
When I was training for the half, I ate a lot more than I do now. Tons of fruit, peanut butter, milk and protein bars. I didn't really carb load or protein load. I just ate enought to keep me going. There's a window about 15 mins - 45 mins after you run that's best to eat in. Try a balance of 40% carbs/30% fat/30% protein in that window. I drank alot of milk after I ran to replensih my body. Tons of water for hydration. Propel is really good to but it has 2 g. sugar (I think) and I still dump on almost ANY sugar. I couldn't find "diet" gatorate although some people say it exists - I think it's urban legend Once you start doing your long runs (1 hour or longer) make sure you take fuel and hydration with you. I would take protein bar, peanut butter tube and water (or run by a starbucks and buy it). That's what I usually did b/c I didn't want to carry it. Good luck! Tandi 246-144 at goal

Hi!! I just happened to see you request for posts in the April 2004. I'm thrilled for you and your running. I couldn't get my last 20 lbs off so I started training for a 1/2 marathon. I trained from Oct. - April and ran the whole darn 13.1 miles on April 2 in honor of my one year suriversary!! You can do it - I never ran (heck, I hardly ever walked) a mile in my life before this. It is total mind over matter once you get your cardio endurance over about 5 miles. I promise you. If I can do it, you can do it. I'm not training for another run now. But I still run just b/c I like it - bizarre!! Who would have thought that? My big fitness goal right now is to do 50 push ups. The real ones - military style - not the whimpy girl ones. 50 push ups by Dec. 31. Today I did 1. Yes, that's it but I'll make it and so will you. 10 miles for you. 50 push ups for me.
