Hi, I was wondering if anyone has had their surgery during the school term? If so how long did it take before you returned to work. If everything goes right I plan to stay out at least two weeks. Do I need to think I need to take another week or two? Was it hard to get back into the swing of things at work? I teach special education and we do a lot of hands on activities. Will this be a problem?

I went back to my special education class 11 days after open RNY. Many people I talked to don't know how I did it. I think this surgery affects each of us a little differently. I had no complications... I teach severly emotionally disturbed children (k-2nd), so we also do a lot of hands on, and a good bit of physical restraining to keep kids safe during an episode. I had a lot of help with the physical aspects of my job from my co-workers.... they yelled at me every time I tried to do something I shouldn't. Anyway, make sure you wear a binder and keep in mind your lifting restrictions. I was tired at the end of the day, but I was able to make it through..... Good luck to you! I work as a para in a Middle School. I had WLS on 8/23/04. I was back to work for the first day of meetings on 9/7/04. I also go to school three nights a week and I was back to school the same week. I feel great and have lost 35 lbs. I have talked to people who are out of work for weeks. If nothing goes wrong you could be back to work in two or three weeks. Good luck to you. Lynn

Lady B. While I had my surgery during the summer, and open, a friend had hers during the school year. She was out about 3 weeks. I would plan for an extra week and if you feel up to going back after 2 weeks, you can always cancell the sub. If you have the same problems we have with getting subs, it is better over schedule and hope you don't need one. Than it is to need one extra time and they have already promised to do long term subing for someone else.
