Topic: why can't I get a job?
Hi! I am a second career teacher. I earned my certificate in Elementary Ed 1 and 1/2 years ago and sub regularly but can't seem to even get an interview much less hired. I am very depressed right now because I did a long term sub for 5 months this past year and did not even get a call from that principal to interview for any of the six openings he had for this year. In our district there were almost 100 openings this year due to an early retirement plan they offered and I did not get one call! I have sent personal letters to the different principals as well as spoken to many in person. I feel my weight may have something to do with it. I am about 130 lbs overweight. I have had a consult with the surgeon and have begun the process of getting this surgery but I am still depressed. Just needed to get that off my chest. Thanks

Joanne - I don't read the teaching board very much...just checked in and saw your post to Jack. WOW! What is the "social security" thing you are talking about? I did notice that the teacher job fairs I have attended last spring had a LOT of Texas districts there! "Stagedoor" Debbie Drama teaching in California

I'm sorry that you were discriminated against for your weight (or, at least, you feel you were). And I want to wish you the VERY BEST in your upcoming surgery! Gosh...next week you'll be on the "Loser's Bench" with a bunch of us!! Congrats on your surgery date. I'll be interested to hear whether, next summer, you get a teaching job...because you will have melted like the Wicked Witch of the West this year!!! Best of luck! My teaching certificate is in Physical Education. I applied for a teaching position 2 years ago. I truly feel I didn't get the job because of my weight. I will be having the surgery in 2 days and then when I decide to try interviewing again post op I will see if this was true. When I am a thin person applying for a teaching position I think I will have a better chance of getting the job this time.

I signed a contract to teach part time for 4 days a week. Its great because it gets my foot in the door plus it allows me to work my regular job.
