Post-Op Question for the Experts

I am four weeks out and I was on a two-week pre diet prior to my surgery. I lost 17.8 pounds prior to my surgery and since surgery I have lost 15.6 pounds, which is a total of 33.4 pounds in six weeks (I know is still very good). This is strange, but I weighed the day I got home, I was curious, but I had gained 10 pounds while in the hospital, no reason why, unless one of you know why? I guess my question is...Am I doing about normal, because I have been disappointed with my post-op weight loss , I have been doing everything by the book, regardless of the nausea. I have been going to the gym 3-4 days a week, I even have a personal trainer that I have been working with and we are working on my energy level and building myself up to 5 days. Even when I do not go to the gym, I walk at home. What else should I be doing or is this just normal? Is my body just refusing to let go earlier than others do? I am getting 60 to 70 grams of protein each day, in the form of food, Isopure, or Whey protein powder. I have not cheated or swayed at all, as a matter of a fact, I have to force myself to eat, strange but very true. I began at 242 and as of yesterday I weighed 209, I know we are not suppose to compare each other, but I am curious as to if anyone else has had a similar problem or if this is truly a problem? Thanks for any input!! Shelia

The post-op weight gain is normal. It is due to the anesthesia and IV fluids they have you on. I think you are right on track with your weight loss. You are actually considered a lightweight with a starting weight of 242. My starting weight was 287 and the day of surgery I was 270. It sounds like you are doing everything right, especially since you are dealing with such nausea. Just keep up the good work and you will see the pounds drop off. You're gonna be a hottie!!! Susan

It sounds to me like you are doing great! You are really doing awesome with your protein to be so early out...much better than a lot of us, me included. It has taken me nearly three months to work up to that protein level so give yourself a pat on the back! I think Susan answered the rest very well so I won't add any more...just keep up the good work!

Hi Sheila, Susan put it correct regarding the fluids and medications while you were in the hospital. I have been out for almost 14 months and I still can't get in that much protein nor have I ever been able to get in all my water, so I applaud you for what you have done so far. Each of us lose in different ways, so don't compare yourself to others. You are doing great for being out only a month. I am proud of you. Kathy
