Port site issue
I'm one week post-op and feeling great and doing great. I decided to do a little work outside and only swept my front porch. Now my port site is painful. Not excruciating but nagging/burning/sore. Did I just overdo it or is this something to worry about? I really wanted to start some mild physical activity this week but now I'm scared.
Did your surgeon have you on any kind of lifting restriction? I know I had a lifting limit of not more than 5 lbs for the first 6 weeks. It takes more than 5 lbs of lifting effort to sweep, mop, vacuum, etc.
You probably just pushed the envelope and will be sore for a coupld of days. I would think that you'll be okay unless the pain gets worse or the area becomes hot and/or red. You might feel better if you call your surgeon's office just to make sure.
Hi Delora, I have a port in the right shoulder. I will be 16 months out next week. Sometimes when I lift or use my right arm too much or lift something with that arm, my port will hurt for a few days. Remember it's always there, no blood pressure cuff or blood draw from the veins unless they are drawing it from your port. It will be sore for a few days. Just don't over do it and it'll be nice to you. Kathy
Sorry your feeling some pain but I think you over did. The port site will remain tender for months. I am six months out an can still get it stirred up by doing something different that those muscles are not use to. The first six weeks you should take it easy it takes that long just to heal. Your port is stitched to muscle tissue and takes a while to develop scar tissue. Walking is a good mild physical activity. Just hold off on the sweeping, mopping and vacuuming. Welcome to the losers bench.
I am 3 weeks out and my port side still bothers me some. I wouldn't worry unless it doesn't go away when you rest. Sweeping shouldn't do any damage. Your body is probably just adjusting to the port. I tote my 15 pound 6 month old all the time. My doctor doesn't have any weight restrictions except to say don't do anything that hurts you. My husband and I were both back at the gym (mostly treadmill) at one week out. Furthermore, my husband is 7 weeks out and he says the port area was the last to heal and it still bothers him on occasion.
