Looking for type 1 diabetics....
I am looking for a type 1 diabetic who has had a gastric bypass. I am having a hard time finding information on the affects this has on type 1 diabetics. Please help and if you know of someone you can give them my email address…[email protected]
Thanks….Keith (bigflip)
I have had diabetes since I was 16 going on 17 and have been on insulin that entire time, I am now 38. Prior to surgery I had to take a very high about of insulin 40 units of regular three times a day and 14 units of regular at bedtime, I have a high resistance to insulin and the high doses of insulin also hendered my weightloss attempts. I now take only 15 units of Lantus at bedtime and my blood sugars range from 73 to 97 with my last Ha1c being 5.3, in the past I had Ha1c's between 10 and 14 regardless of how close I watched my diet, because I was very difficult to control. I am still hoping that I will get off insulin completly, but July 29th will be six months and I have lost over 70 pounds as of this morning I am 30 pounds away from my goal of 140, therefore I may not be able to get off the insulin, however one shot and the control I now have is a lot better than I had prior to surgery. I have just been on insulin for 21 to 22 years and with Type 1 diabetics, insulin is something that your pancress does not produce and therefore shots are still required, I hope this helps and if you have any more questions please give me call.

When i was diagnosed with type 1 I was 9 and not over weight. I gained weight at about the time I turned 13 all thru high school I gained. It wasn't until the summer before college that i lost around 200lbs. At 165lbs i was still on insulin. It is just very important to me that I talk to someone who is type 1.
I have been overweight since about 10 or 11, but never as bad as it had been since I turned 17 or 18 and older. They have never been able to determine if I have Type I or if it is Type II and just require insulin, because of my weight and no history of diabetes in my family. When I was younger, they did not check for diabetes like they do in children now unless you have a family history. I was in a very bad car accident and that is when they discovered my diabetes. I guess now we will know when I get the rest of my weight off it is actually Type I or Type II, but one thing for sure my diabetes is controlled and I have not had to take near the insulin that I use to take, BIG BENEFIT due to surgery.
