Hey Bob, thanks for the info.  I can deal with a little gas if it means I'm not eating eggs, yogurt or oatmeal!!!  Thanks again.

I cringe when people ask about taco bell pintos.  They have a lot of carbs & calories... not all that much protein compared to other food that is lots less carbs & calories s...  in the beginning, first few weeks maybe, after surgery...  when you can't eat much at all and need "slider foods" that go down easy.. perhaps.  But as a rule, begin quickly to settle in your new lifestyle.  I would suggest this not being part of your normal routine or habit food.  Its important to get into better habits quickly.  Others may have different thoughts, but I just never turned to these for my source of protein.  According to TheDailyPlate, they have 19 carbs, subtract the 7 dietary fibers = 12 carbs.  My surgeon had said no more than 5 carbs per meal...  Oatmeal..  not so certain thats great either.  Just trying to help you.   Check the back of your oatmeal.  It has probably approx. 20+ carbs per serving.  Try going to Fitday.com or TheDailyPlate.com.  They are both free sites, and you can look up the counts on food products and get calories, fats, carbs... Susan J:  what are your thoughts on these two foods?

Refried beans & cheese, and oatmeal are both allowed during the pureed stage on the program at Baptist. Our program is much less restrictive on carbs but they do encourage high fiber carbs as opposed to empty carbs like crackers, bread, potatoes, etc. I would not rely on oatmeal as a protein source unless it is one of the special high protein oatmeals. Also, steer clear of the high sugar "flavored" oatmeals. I believe the program still recommends foods with no more than 12 grams of carb per serving. More than this may cause dumping, even if you don't consume a full serving. I fixed my own pintos and cheese at home so I could use fat free refried beans. Add a spoonful of enchilada sauce and a smidge of cheese and it's better than Taco Bell. Of course, restricting carbs leaves more room for protein, especially in the beginning. You should always have your protein first and then low fat, low sugar, high fiber, healthy carbs if you have room.
