Side Effects of Iron Supplement

Good morning, I hope everyone is having a great Friday morning :)   I take Foltrin, which is a combination of Iron and B vitamins with intrinsic factor.  The label on the prescription warns it can cause discoloration of feces and urine--so that didn't surprise me! However, my urine has a horrible smell. I think it must be from the iron.  I've had urinalysis done, and I don't have an infection, nor do I have a yeast infection.  I am 6 months post op.  This has been going on ever since I began taking it.  Do others have this same problem? Also do you think switching to another type will help? Different companies make the same formula, I don't know if it would make a difference or not. Thanks for your input.

I take the BA iron and I don't have that problem.  When I first started with the iron, I was constipated but I guess once my body got used to it , it worked itself out (no pun intended). darlene

I was taking the combo as well and my pee stank to the high heavens. I now take the iron and b vits seperately and have no odor what so ever. So it wouldn't hurt to try and see if some other combo might work for ya.  ***Nicole***

Talk to your surgeon before changing your vitamin. The Foltrin is actually iron, B12 and Intrinsic Factor. Our body is not able to absorb the B12 without the Intrinsic Factor because our stomachs no longer manufacture enough. If you switch to another form of B12, it must be sublingual (dissolved under the tongue) or intramuscular (shots). I stopped taking the Foltrin due to extreme constipation. Since I am post-menopausal, Dr. Spaw decided I could do without the iron so I give myself monthly B12 shots. My insurance covers the B12 injectible, where they would not cover the Foltrin or sublinguals. Go figure! My PCP and Dr. Spaw continue to monitor my iron levels and they stay in the high normal range.
