HI Anna I had Dr.Lucktong for my surgeon too.. I absolutely will tell you he and the nutritionist DO NOT want us drinking diet sodas or regular sodas at all. On one of the sheets they gave me it had diet sodas listed as one of the drinks we could have...but they marked it off and said NO you can't have that. Now I am not sure of the ramifications around drinking it, but I will say this, Going through the surgery, which isn't a piece of cake, and doing what we have to do to prepare for it and recover from it, It isn't worth letting a craving take over. If you give into the craving now with the sodas..you may gave into a craving of cake , ice cream, and other things down the road and your weight loss will stop. I hate to sound mean or defensive to anyone here, but just because one person may not gain weight on drinking sodas or having any other problems, doesn't mean another person won't. Is it worth the risk? Is it worth feeling guilty later? I don't think so! Good luck, take a walk to ward off the cravings. And please think of the positive results Hugs JudyB

Hey Anna, that's a big negative from me too. There were very few things that I was told I would was never to do again: Smoke, drink soda, and eat rice. I was fine with all of that. I do miss having a soda from time to time, especially rootbeer floats, but I don't want to chance it. I've seen some girls that are pretty far post-op that went back to drinking diet soda and have slowly gained a lot of their weight back. One girl went as far as to have the surgery again, said the first one was botched. BS. She's drinking soda, eating fast food, and not following her doctor's orders. I was told that the carbonation expands our pouches, therefore we eat more. I didn't go to medical school so I'm taking their word for it and following mostly everything to a "T". I do cave and eat more sugar than I'm supposed to occassionally, I do drink from a straw, and I don't wait the 30 minutes before and after I eat (that will never be possible), but we are not perfect. I think everyone is right above, just ask your doc/nut, they'll be able to list everything medically why we are not approved. Hope this helps! Amber

Hey Anna, Soda is on my never list too. Well, actually, we were told that if you get it completely flat, then you can have it once in awhile. Personally, I tried it and really found, after only a sip, I didn't care for it so why should I force myself to like it. I was told that the gas stretches your pouch and also that (and they dont know why but figure it is something with the chemicals) those who go back to diet sodas gain weight back. I know about 3-4 people at work who have had surgery and have gained all or most of their weight back and they all drink soda. I'm not chancin it...really not worth it to me. As the others said, you should check with your doc and your nut and make your decision from there. Good luck! Christine
