Hey All, I know we are not suppose to drink with a straw the first 6-8 weeks post-op. I will be 7 weeks Saturday. I have not used a straw but it will seem easier to sip with a straw. I am a gulper and it is so hard to drink my water or other liquids just taking little sips. Also, I am one of the types of people when I go to resturants I don't like drinking out a glass without using a straw. Does anyone actually drink with straw or are we forbidden, what will happen if we did use a straw will it make us sick or something???? Mo~

Hi Mo, I was told no straw ever because it puts too much air in the pouch. I'm the same way at restaurants. Jen

Mo- I don't drink from a straw either. I was told they were no-nos for the same reason (air). The funny thing is that when I was in the hospital for my gallbladder surgery, during recovery they had me drinking from a straw...HA! OH, well I thought, it's not much, I'll be mindful not to gulp air. I figured I was so full of gas at that moment anyway it wasn't gonna be that big of a deal. BUT...as a general, in real life rule...I avoid straws. Christina S

Hi Mo, I never use a straw either as we were told it is a no-no as it will put too much air into our pouches...... so I have never used one since surgery. I certainly do not need any additional gas issues )) Jackie

I've been drinking with a straw since the day they let me have my first sip after surgery. It won't stretch your pouch but it may give you the gurgles. If it wasn't for the straw, I would have never got all my liquids in. I personally think that it should be left up to you. I can live with the bubbles, so I used a straw.

I was told no straw ever, also. It can put too much air into the stomach.

It is amazing how everyone's instructions from their surgeons vary. I was not told the straw thing by Dr. Afram but the nurse in the hospital told me not too. I have been sipping with a straw while at work with no issues. Necole 264/251/135
