NEED HELP WITH THE PROTEIN
Hey everyone I know I havn't wrote on here for a long time but I been sick. Well am better now BUT I NEED HELP WITH THE PROTEIN THING...I try to drink it but I can't dose anyone know if there any protein pill I can take or what is a good protein drink. am 4 months out of my surgery an I loss already 70 lbs BUT now my hair is starting to fall out..an how much portein do I need a day. I would call an ask my doc. but he ret right after my surgery..also I was taken this protein drink from HERBALIFE...but the fiber in there was making me real sick so please please can anyone tell me how to get the protein I need in my body a day..THANKS YA'LL ....MARIA
I get my protein mostly with Pure Protein bars, 20 gms each and only 170 calories and to be eaten with 8 oz of water,..I love that part!
I was told 60+ gms of protein a day. I did that until muy walking got to 2 hras a day and I started trainnig for a 10K so I was working in some joggin too. I found I needed a lot more protein.. SOme resaerch taught me that 60 is a minimum the body needs to not cannibalize muscle tissue. Most sources recommend what seems to be absurd amount,...1 gm per pound of goal weight. That would be 200 gms for me,...big increase. I am currently taking in about 120-160 gms a day, using the protein bars, a homemade protein smoothie (some chocolate protein powder with a banana, 8 oz OJ, sometimes some skim milk, and ice). The protein powder is from Walmart , $11.96 a jar, 25 gms per scoop.
However, with you losing hair, I would recommend the liquid protein that comes in the plastic test tube looking things. Many at my local support groups, espcially the ladies, have success with that and it reduces to eleiminates their hiar loss problems I have never experienced. Some drug stores have them and a place called the VItamin shop in richmond carries them. They can also be ordered online and run just around $2 a vial. I'd reccomend a search on liquid protein, there are abuout 4 different brands the last time I looked. GNC might have them, if you have one in your area but they (GNC) tend to be on the higher priced side.
Good luck to you. Hope any of this helps.
Hi Maria,
I had my surgery in Nov 2006. I've was taken Unjury protein drink that must be ordered on line. It was costly so I changed to Whey protein with each servings of 25gms of protein. My had was also breaking out so my surgent informed to me to take zinc 35-50mg. I was told to drink around 65-70 grams of protein a day, if your not eating alot of protein. Make sure you eat protein with every meal.

Hi Maria,
I reccomend the New Whey Liquid Protein Vials in either the 25g per 2.9 oz. or the 42g protein per 2.9oz. If you get the 42g, split them up - do not drink all of it at one time because from what I have heard our bodies cannot abosrb more than 30g protein at once. I get them from this web site
http://www.wholesalesupplementstore.com/new-whey-liquidprotein.html . They are cheaper on this sight than at the Vitamin Shoppe. I use one of the 25g ones per day along with my regular high protein 2 oz. soft meals (3 meals and 1 snack per day). It's working for me - I've lost 27 pounds and am 29 days post op. Good luck to you! SOunds like you are losing a lot weight! Congrats!

Maria-
Hey there.....hope you are feeling better. Protein is the issue, huh? Many people have problems with protein, so you are not alone in that sense.
Protein is EXTREMELY important for us. So, it is very important that you find something and stick with it. Protein helps with cell rebuilding, which is needed in recovering from our surgery (the stage you are currently in). Also, helps with muscle building, energy, assisting with satiaty (feeling of fullness for a longer period of time) and keeping your level from spiking (like they do when you eat carbs).
Many docs tell us to intake 60+ grams of protein a day. However, this is actually a low number. It should be 100+ per day. Why do they give us the low number? Because so many patients are lucky to get in the 60+ per day, so to avoid the feeling of failure they give them the lowest amount required.
However, we should really strive towards to 100+ per day for optimal recovery and results.
There are many protein sources out there. Some like the bullets, because they can get in alot of protein in a small amount of fluids. There are also drinks, shakes and bars. To my knowledge, pills are not available. And even if they were, we would not create enough stomach acids to properly break them down.
The Herbalife I suspect is more of a diet drink and does not provide the amount of nutrition and protein you need. But, I cannot say for sure.
There are many websites out there where you can purchase samples. I always recommend checking into them, since it is much cheaper to buy a sample than a full jug. Also, I heard that GNC carries some samples - you may want to check into them. The Vitamin Shoppe over on Indepence Blvd carries the bullets. They are $2.50 each and this would allow you to try one to see if you can tolerate the flavor before placing an order. They also carry unflavored whey protein powder that you can add to yogurt, crystal lite, decaf tea, broth, cottage cheese, etc. It's 17.99. Plus, the Vitamin Shoppe will allow you to return protein powder if you do not like it.
They also carry Protein Delite, Elite, and Syntrax - These are popular brands with bariatric patients. They also carry Micellar Milk - 40 grams of protein. I have not tried it, but have heard lots of good reviews. And they have the new Oh Yea bars. I tried one tonight and it was actually pretty good.
along with the protein supplements, you should be eating more protein and less carbs in your meals. Cheese, tuna, eggs, etc.
This is pretty long, but I hope that it helps.
Good Luck!

Hi Maria! Protein can be an issue for lots of people. The protein vials are good, lots of people use them because it is not a lot to drink and they are convenient. I suggest getting a lot of samples of powders and trying them to see if you can find one or two you like. I also use protein bars. I like the Atkins Chocolate Chip Granola, you can get them online, at vitamin stores, walmart, target, 7-11. The unflavored Unjury is supposed to work good also, I know a lot of people who mix it with foods, crystal light, etc. As for your hair loss, it is so common because of the weight loss, anesthia, etc. Kathy (of Kathy & Rich) will tell you that she had hair loss when doing weigh****chers & losing a lot. Hope some of the suggestions from everyone helps.
Courtney
