Does anyone notice they are doing this more after the surgery? I never drank much before..but I am drinking more than normal now. Just wondering. Melissa

Hey Melissa. This is a very debateable subject. There are a lot of new studies out about the issue of transferring addictions with weight loss surgery. It isn't just because of weight loss surgery, many people with any kind of addiction are at risk for it. The theory is that the additction to food is transferred to things such as alcohol, shopping, gambling, working out etc. It can be very dangerous when it involves alcohol. Our systems are routed differently and the impact can be more severe and dangerous because it goes straight to the system. It can take less to get us intoxicated and we might not realize it. My nutritionist made a point also to discuss the issues with the carbonation and how it makes us gassy, and the fact that in general it is just wasted calories that we don't need. I personally feel that it ties in emotionally too. When drinking we lose some of our inhibitions and it is easier to get out and join the crowd and enjoy ourselves, something that might have been hard when we were overweight. It is a struggle as we adjust to all the changes we go through. I do sometimes chose to drink but am very careful to watch myself because of some of the things I have learned. Courtney

Melissa- I think Courtney nailed it on the head. I've not chosen to drink but I did experience the beginning of an addiction transfer when I was about 4-5 months out. I caught it quickly and have since taken measures to work out those emotions...but it's very real. Christina S
