Open or Lap

I know the difference between the two, and I also know I am a very big girl, about 450. So I was wondering if there is anything I can start doing now that would help my chances with a lap RNY instead of an open?? I have my surgery consult in June and plan on asking the surgeon. I know it has to do with the liver and such so any advice would be great. I really want Lap done because of the healing time. Dr. Schirmer was able to do my gall bladder lap, so I am hoping that is a good sign even though I know its two different surgeries lol....so just wondering what I should be doin

Like we have discussed this before, it will all depend on what happens after they get started. They were 100 % sure I was Lap and when I awoke I had the open and the Lap so dont be surprised and be prepaired for either. Because he will do wats best for you and your safety. I was 40+ pounds smaller and they did just fine till they got to the breast bone and top of the stomach where it was visuallually (sp) unclear where they needed to cut, so for my sake he opened to be safe instead of cutting something that wasnt needed. So just be prepaired no matter what they tell you in consult or the morning of. It will be for your safety.

I was 256lbs and my surgeon only did open surgery at the time but I recovered really good and my scar is only 3 inches long. I do not regret getting it that way and a month later they stopped ding as many open surgeries and nearly always do lap now. It is the recovery that takes a little longer and you are more suseptible to hernias if you lift too much while recovering with the open. Many surgeons do like to put you on a liver shrinking diet for a week before surgery to give them more room to move inside your stomach but my surgeon never required that. It does all depend on your surgeon so he really is the best peron to ask. Either way I am sure you will do really wel! Jackie
