I have a questions about drinking sodas.  My surgeon told me that I will never be able to drink  sodas again because of the carbonation. I have a friend that had surgery around the same time that I did and she is drinking diet sodas. I am just concerned, but wouldn't soda blow you pouch up so early out? I am just concern for her we had different surgeons. She said that her surgeon said that she will be fine. I would not trust that... Montego

It's kind of a controversial subject, Mo. All surgeons are different. The ones near me mostly agree that soda is a BIG no no. Not only because of the carbonation but because of the sugar, even in diet stuff. I'm not chancing it, I didn't do this just to have it reversed. There is no soda in the world worth that price.

Amber I totally agree, I fought to hard to get this surgery and I am not going backwards just for a soda. I tried telling her but she said that her doc told her so it is ok. Oh well... Mo

Ok....some will tell you one thing, others will say something else.   In my opinion, go with your gut feeling.  My doc told no, never, nada ever. To ebgin with, it is empty calories.  You just do not need it.  But, more importantly, the carbonation does cause probelms with the pouch.  Blowing it up is one such problem, but rememebr back to the experiemnts we did as kids with sodas.  Sod will eat at your stomach lining.  Problem is we don't have much lining anymore.  I know many who let their soda go flat before drinking it - so then, it goes back to the empty calories. but...here is a good example for you.  A girl that I know drink a diet mountain dew everyday.  And stopped losing by her 2nd month out.  her doc flipped and told her to get off of the soda.  Now, she drinks 1 per week as a "reward".  She really does not need it, but....... So....do you want to stop losing so early out????? Would you DIE if you didn't have a soda????? So...my personal opion...stay away from the soda and listen to your doc!

Jill, I agree.  I would be scared to do it because of the carbonation, I mean so early out. I just wanted to get different out looks on this soda deal. She (my friend) thinks it is no big deal but I do. I want her to be successful with her weight loss. I am just going to sit back and let her figure it out herself I have told her that It is not good but she is still doing it because her doc said that is was ok. we will see Mo

Mo. My surgeon says no , however at 3 years post op  I may have an orange soda that I let go flat , only because I love the way it taste with my Nectar .  I would encourage you to stay away from them this early out . I remember I Had a sip of a Diet Pepsi about 5 months out and thought I would die .. the gas was terrible .  Play it smart stick to water or non carbonated .. you will not regret it .  Tink

No soda for me.  I was told no also.  By accident about 14 months out I grabbed the wrong drink of the table and took a sip of my nephews coke.  It was the nastiest tasting thing (I hadn't had any soda since about 3 months before surgery).  I don't see myself going back that way.

After my first year I began drinking Diet Sodas..I am 3+ yrs out and yes- up 15 pounds or so from where I wanna be - but i know what it's from - eating more carbs and less excercise. My surgeon group says ever patient is unique - try it - IF it doesn't work - you will know it- and then just say no. Good luck. David
