Not a Pound or an Inch

It's been a little over 6 weeks now and the scale has not moved or is there any change in my measurements. How depressing. I walk about 45 mins a day and go to the gym and do some cardio like 3x a week for like 30 mins.I am getting in at "least" 60 grams of protein a day. Don't get me wrong I know I have done some not so nice things..like grab a handful of my sons cheetos..(those things just call me..lol) Maybe have some peanut butter crackers..(tho I have always been eating these right along) I did actually for the first time in months have some bread..was a small piece of italian bread with dinner the other night. So YES I seem to be having somewhat of a carb issue but,I didn't think I was over doing it. I still fight the 64oz of water daily but,try my best to get in what I can. I also know I have been having issues on somedays with the 1000 calorie mark..there are just days that I am NOT hungry and I don't relaize I haven't eaten at all until I start dinner then I say oh no I didn't eat and thats usually on a day Im fighting my water. So I was just wondering daily why's what you guys have been eating and how you get it all in time frame why's. I still have like 50-55 more pds to go and am really hoping this isn't the end..thanks in advance for any feedback..

Hey girl.  You are taking a big step by admitting there are some issues.  Doesn't sound to me like you are really over doing it on the carbs.  You seem to be doing good on your exercise, maybe change it up some or up your cardio a bit to put in something new.  Not getting enough to eat could definitely be a problem, without having enough calories your body will go into starvation mode and not lose because it will be storing everything.  The water can also be a problem.  You need the water to help with your matabolism and burning those calories.   Here is my basic meals for a day, hope it helps.  within an hour of wakeup - snack of nuts, piece of string cheese, or piece of jerky 1st 16 oz of liquid 9:30 - 10:00 a.m - breakfast, (omlette, oatmeal, yogurt, with fruit & carb such as whole grain/wheat toast, bagel, english muffin) 2nd 16 oz liquid 1:30 - 2:00 - lunch (left over meat, & veggies from dinner, sandwich on whole grain bread with fruit, maybe a salad with meat in it) 3rd 16 oz liquid 4:30 - 5:00 sometimes I have a snack (popcorn, string cheese, protein bar), sometimes I do a 4th 16 oz liquid here 7:00 - dinner - usually meat & veggies, with a small side of some carb, sometimes sandwich & fruit (when I am at my part time job), salads with meat, etc.) 4th or 5th 16 oz liquid 9:00 on the nights I work I have a string cheese snack & then finish my drink Other than basic walking, etc. my exercise is weights & cardio (approximately 1 hour total) at the gym 3x's (sometimes 4) a week, and I bowl one night a week.  Right now I have not been getting to the gym and I need to get myself back on track.

Naomi,  Here is some valuable info from my Back On Track course . You may be going through a stall out as well . I would take a serious look at your calories , water and exercise .. and see what numbers you come up with . Check your carb intake too . At your stage , I only allowed myself 30 % carbs . I wanted to go into Ketosis so I could burn the fat . It was doctor approved . Check it out , if you have any questions let me know .  Natalie Eating a low calorie diet actually slows down your metabolism.

Diets containing more protein can reduce the drop in metabolic rate seen with low calorie diets.

To lose fat, you need to cut down on calories, to consume less energy than you expend. But. Here is the problem. Your body responds to this drop in food intake by slowing your metabolic rate, to keep you alive, which makes fat loss increasingly difficult.

Our ancestors had to deal with large variations in the availability of food. Those who survived were the ones whose bodies could adjust to this fluctuation in food availability. Those, whose bodies couldn’t adjust, died.

The result?

Our bodies want to hold on to our stores of energy for survival. It thus preserves fat by lowering the metabolic rate whenever food intake drops.

High protein diets reduce the drop in metabolic rate, and also lead to a greater feeling of fullness.

Dr Scott Connelly writes in, "Body Rx: pages 18-19…."Why do MASS protein? To escape fat-storage mode, you have to eat more protein.

If you want to shut down your metabolism and stay in fat-storage mode permanently, stay on the standard diet prescription- the high-carb, low-protein, low-calorie, low-fat diet. Protein is the key metabolic currency of the body. Your body was designed to run on it. Protein molecules drive all the chemical reactions involved in the breakdown and absorption of food, including carbohydrates and fat. In other words, protein drives virtually all aspects of metabolism. Many studies, including some of my own, show that simply adding protein to your diet turns on your fat-burning/muscle-building switch, even if you make no other lifestyle changes. When I gave one group of body builders extra protein along with their normal diet, they gained two times as much muscle mass as a second group of bodybuilders doing exactly the same workout and eating the same diet but without the extra protein. When you’re stuck in fat-storage mode, you need a powerful protein boost to jump-start your metabolism back into fat-burning mode. In most cases, you cannot easily get enough protein from food alone to do the job. To fill the protein gap, in addition to increasing protein consumption through food, I recommend a daily high-potency protein powder. It is a simple, safe, efficient way to repair your metabolism and build a lean, shapely body."

Muscle uses more calories to maintain itself than fat. Peole who are more muscular (and have a lower percentage of body fat) are said to have a higher metabolism than others that are less muscular.

Symptoms of slowed metabolism

Fatigue, feeling cold, dry skin, constipation, slow pulse and low blood pressure. These symptoms could be the result of a medical condition rather than low metabolism – MAKE SURE YOU SEE YOUR DOCTOR to rule out any type of medical problem.

How can I increase my metabolism?

Begin to exercise and stop dieting. You can increase your muscle mass by doing some type of resistance work (i.e. lifting weights, using exertubes, rubberbands, dynabands, hand weights, etc…). You can also decrease your level of body fat by doing some type of aerobic exercise at least 3 days a week for longer than 20 minutes. This is exercise such as walking, jogging, step aerobics, hi/low aerobics, biking, swimming, etc, that will increase your heartrate and keep it there for the duration of the exercise session. You also need to eat! Do not diet, jus****ch the types of foods you eat, and drink your protein!!

How can I lower my metabolism (but why would you want to)?

If you eat a very low calorie diet, your metabolism will slow down in order for your body to survive (your body thinks it is starving).

Ketosis happens when you start to cut your carbs back .. and go low carb .. high protein . This worked for me . The downside is your breath wreaks for a while and your underarms may sweat it out . But I only did the real low carb for about a year .. I am  now doing more carbs .. and more protein .   A lot of people are confused about the term "ketosis". You may read that it is a "dangerous state" for the body, and, indeed it sounds abnormal to be "in ketosis". But ketosis merely means that our bodies are using fat for energy. Ketones (also called ketone bodies) are molecules generated during fat metabolism, whether from the fat in the guacamole you just ate or fat you were carrying around your middle. When our bodies are breaking down fat for energy, most of the fat gets converted more or less directly to ATP (remember high school biology? This is the "energy molecule"). But ketones are also produced as part of the process. When people eat less carbohydrate, their bodies turn to fat for energy, so it makes sense that more ketones are generated. Some of those ketones (acetoacetate and ß-hydroxybutyrate) are used for energy - the heart muscle and kidneys, for example, prefer ketones to glucose. Most cells, including the brain cells, are able to use ketones for at least part of their energy. But there is one type of ketone molecule, called acetone, that cannot be used and is excreted as waste, mostly in the urine and breath (sometimes causing a distinct breath odor). If enough acetone is in our urine, it can be detected using a dipstick commonly called by the brand name "Ketostix" (though there are other brands as well). Even though everyone is generating ketones continually, this detection in the urine is what is what is commonly called "ketosis". The higher the concentration of ketones in the urine, the more purple the sticks will turn. The Atkins diet in particular advises people to monitor ketosis as an indication of fat burning. Other reduced carbohydrate diets don't pay much attention to this, or aren't low enough in carbs to make much of an impression on the sticks. (These latter diets are sometimes called "nonketogenic" low carb diets.)

Why do some people think ketosis is a bad thing?

There are two reasons for this. The first is the assumption that if a body is burning a lot of fat for energy, it must not be getting "enough" glucose. However, there is no indication, from studying people on reduced carbohydrate diets, that this is the case (though there usually a short period of adjustment - less than a week in most cases). Although it's true that our bodies can't break fat down into glucose (though interestingly, they easily use glucose to make fat!), our bodies can convert some of the protein we eat into glucose. Indeed, this works well for people who don't tolerate a lot of sugar, because this conversion happens slowly so it doesn't spike blood glucose. In Type 1 diabetes, a dangerous condition called ketoacidosis can develop, and is sometimes confused with normal ketosis. The body usually avoids this state by producing insulin, but people with Type 1 diabetes are unable to produce insulin. Even most of the people with Type 2 diabetes who inject insulin usually produce enough insulin of their own to prevent ketoacidosis
