? for RNY vets (2 yrs+ out)
Hey yall,
I am considering RNY and have a few ?s. For those who are a few years out, I would like to know what kind of ongoing lifestyle issues/health problems/just plain issues you have or have had due to the surgery? I know that eating habits should change for life to maintain and be healthy etc but i want to know some of the other changes you have in the long run?
digestive issues, other health problems associated with long term living, etc? i have read about ulcers and anemia and even some stuff about making it thru pregnancy after...but how much do you still have to think about your surgery after some years go by? from stuff as basic as "can I have a bite of cake at a wedding" to ongoing dumping/medical issues? has something not been quite right since the surgery? i just want to try to understand how my life would be later...is this something that will dominate my life forever? I know that everyone's experience is different, but i just want to hear what yall have to say.
Thanks,
Janeen
Hello Janeen ,
First let me tell you that we both share the same surgeon . He was my life saver . And I owe him everything.
As far as my life now . I am 3 years post op . I still follow the rules. Protein first .. Veggies.. then if there is room .. a carb .
I do eat wedding cake .. small little bite .. but it is enough to satisfy my craving . DO I dump .. yepper and thank God I do . I have lost 200 pounds . I am healthier now than I have ever been . When I started this journey I had diabetes , High cholestoral and dying ... now I am full of life .. and would do this again 2 x a day and 3 on Sunday .
Are there things that can happen .. yes .. but if you follow Dr. Hutchers plan .. take your suppliments and follow their eating protocol , you should be very fullfilled .
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to write me ...
Much resepct ,
Natalie

Hey Janeen. I am 1 yr & 7 months out but figured I would throw my two cents in. The only issue I have at this point is low blood sugar, if I am not eating enough or on schedule my sugar drops. No ulcers, blood work keeps coming back excellent. I still have to think about my surgery every day, if I don't make the right food choices I will regain the weigh and I have to make sure I am getting in my water so I don't get dehydrated, and of course taking all my vitamins. I do have those bites of cake, but I don't really dump so the sugar aspect (or fats) don't react in my system. Ice cream is about the only thing that makes me sick sometimes. Every thing else feels great. I actually haven't gotten normal sicknesses like sinus infections or bronchitis expcept ocassionally since surgery and I used to get them all the time. As for pregnancy questions, there are a few ladies on the board here who have great experience and you can also check out the pregnancy forum. Am I perfect and do everything by the book every day no, but I try really hard to do it because I don't want to go back to where I was.
