One week post-op and can't get in my protein...help!
This has been even harder than I thought it would be. I am one week post-op and cannot get in my protein. All of the protein supplements I have tried taste horrible or make me feel really sick. I have only gotten in 30g yesterday and was up all night sick to my stomach. Today I am terrified to eat anything...I don't know what to do!
Slow down sweety .. One week out .. you are lucky you can get in any ...
You should concentrate on keeping hydrated . The protein will come . If you are sick to your stomach you need to be contacting your surgeons office . You said you are not eating. Are you on solid foods ????
My suggestion would be for you to call your doctor if the sickness persist . What kind of protein are you trying ?
And you should be on a liquid diet . Atleast that is what I was on at a week out . All docs are different .
Call your doc if you are still feeling ill .. otherwise .. keep hydrated .. and keep trying different protein shakes . You must get it in eventually .

Yeah, my doctor said for the first week not to worry about supplements, its just a tender time for the pouch. The only thing I was allowed to eat was Yogurt, Cottage Cheese, Eggs, etc. Very soft foods.
The Carb Master Yogurt at Kroger is under the limits of fat/sugar grams and has 15 grams of protein in it. I find it a great source, and it tastes better than most yogurts to me too. I didn't like the taste of most proteins which is why I ended up shooting the IDS liquid whey protein. If it was going to taste like crap, at least it would be over in 2.9 oz compared to 8 to 16 of mixed crap! That's just my take on it. I've heard unjury powdered has no taste whatsoever, you might want to check into that.
It gets easier, just give yourself some time. The first month is very touchy. Keep asking questions, you'll get the answers you need!
I was told for the first 2 weeks hydrate first and foremost, then protein before anything else. I agree the first week is really rocky. I didn't have any problem with the protein shake (ProComplex Chocolate @ 55 g protein for 8 oz shake), but it still takes me at least 90 minutes to get each one down. My dr said only about 30% of his patients are able to get in the hyrdration AND protein requirements, esp the first weeks! Take care of the sickness first. Good luck.
And everyone know I have had a real hard time with protein and Ms Cleo sent me a sample of both chocolate/vanilla and I can do the chocolate yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!! Thanks Cleo.....

I'm nine days out today and I agree with all the advice above. When I was in the hospital after surgery they gave me Unjury in both vanilla and chocolate. So far it's the only one I have been able to stomach. It's available online at www.unjury.com and each time I order, it arrives the next day.

I've been having a hard time getting in my protein as well. I am a week and a half post op. My nut suggested adding 1/3 cup powdered milk to a cup of skim milk and SF Carnation Instant breakfast. That will give you 20 grams of protein per 8 oz. That's helping me get in at least half my protein for the day...the rest of the time, I am just not feeling hunger. Good luck finding something that works for you.
