Protein Requirements

During my nutrition class I was told that men need 90 grams of protein a day. Right now I am in my 3rd week of pureed food and I am trying to figure out how to get all my protein in. If I have two tablespoons of protein at each of three meals (say it's one egg = 7 grams) and  a 20 gram protein drink between each meal, that only comes to 61 grams of protein. And if I eat something like cottage cheese (3 grams of protein) it's even less. How do you get enough protein?

Yogurt, non -fat plain. ALSO, I take 4 protein drinks a day when I need more protein. I can't always count on being able to eat eggs OR meat even at 19 months post-op. Protein drinks ALWAYS work. I wouldn't be able to get in enough protein were it not for the drinks. Power Crunch protein bars have 15g per bar and I use them as well. Good luck, Lois

Here is what I do - I do not rely on my protein intake to come from food as we malabsob and have no real idea how much we are taking - so I only count my protein from the protein drinks - that way I am really sure of getting enough. Also as you get further out and get your labs done you can see what your protein levels are doing so you will know how much protein you are getting  and know if and when you can adjust..... Jackie

I agree, its too early to try and rely entirely on food. Supplements are the best way to go for right now. I'm a year out and I still drink at least one protein shake a day. The yogurt and cottage cheese I eat have between 12 - 15 grams of protein in it and you can eat a lot more of that. I don't recall having to have that high of protein that early on, so I didn't struggle as much. Overall, until you can eat more meats/poultry/fish, I'd stick with liquid proteins however you can get them down.

MIcheal ,  I am 3 plus years out and I still rely on my protein drinks . But try to get in as much from food as possible . Protein is food from Heaven I say ...

BIOAVAILABILITY OF PROTEIN TYPES

The higher on the list, the better the protein source.

The numbers are the BV. (Biologic value)

This is only how easily the (normal) body can absorb them, not the protein grams in each one. The last few need to be blended to make a complete protein.

And remember…. gastric bypass patients don’t absorb nutrients from food protein very well.

Protein Source

BV

Whey Protein Isolate Blends 100-159 Whey Concentrate (Lactalbumin) 104 Whole Egg 100 Cow's Milk 91 Egg White (Albumin) 88 Fish 83 Beef 80 Chicken 79 Casein (a protein from milk) 77 Rice 74 Soy 59 Wheat 54 Beans 49 Peanuts 43 And keeping to your docs limits are awesome. But I was fortunate enough to have a trainer early out that trained me to up my protein .. water and switch out my exercise for greater weight loss . And well .. Looksy .. it worked . But for right now , you need to concentrate on getting in the 90 . I would say once you master that .. and are on a roll .. which by the way .. Men lose faster than us gals .. you may want to increase the protein and water ..  I am very proud of you .. and remember what I said in my email yesterday .. anytime you need me .. I am here .  Take care ,  Tink

Hey Michael, you are pretty early out still so dont worry too much about not being able to get it all in quite yet.  A few things you can try are to add unflavored protein to the yogurt, cottage cheese, etc.  Add some cheese to your eggs, etc. to get a little bit more in.  Do more protein drinks if you need to and find a protein drink that has more protein in it (25 grams).  If you are feeling overly full and don't think you could get more protein drinks in, try the protein shots (profect, new Whey) they are little vials with like 25 grams of protein in them and are just a few swallows instead of a whole drink.

Michael, Besides the advice from the others, I would add some unflavored protein into your pureed food. I like unjury unflavored the best. Get it at  www.unjury.com

My mainstay to get in 90-100g of protein each day is a 55-g protein drink in the morning - I mix vanilla with different flavors of Crystal Light ,but they can be mixed with milk for additional protein as well.  The rest of the day I just eat protein dense foods as mentioned in other posts.
