Ok...I'm so confused about who I need to go to for my supervised diet......One clinic is telling me one thing and another one is telling me something else!!

I did my supervised diet through my PCP but every insurance and doctor are different.

I agree with Jen.  Your first step should be to call your insurance provider to find out what they require.  I see that you work at UVA, I do too!  Feel free to email me at [email protected] and I can discuss with you the way Southern Health was for me.   Talk to you soon.

Yep check with your specific insurance and surgeon and see what they require so that you are on the right path.  Keep your chin up, sometimes you have to jump all the hoops but it will work itself out.

I have tri care prime and I was told two different things to begin with as well, but luckily I found out that I did need the supervised diet ( which was what my confusion was about because I was told by the nutrientist that I did and then the surgeon said only if your BMI is under 40 ) but I was told the best thing to do is have it so you dont stand the chance of being stuck back on the waiting list if they need it at the post op. Anyhow, I made a apt with my PCP and she gave me a referral for nutrition and I have an apt with them this friday.

( **** If anyone else reads this, instead of making another thread about something simuliar****) Can anyone give me an idea on what their supervised diet was like ??????? Thanks Brandi~

I just went to see my PCP. I had to do it for 3 months because I had 3 months of sorta diet in my chart already. We just talked about what I was doing for a diet. I was limiting my foods to no more than 5g fat, trying to cut unhealthy carbs and also trying to make sure that I was eating non-processed foods. I walk about 45 mins a day and swim almost everyday, too. You can see my ticker, I think it is working pretty well.

Brandi, My insurance company required a 6 month physician supervised diet/fitness program.  I'd already had my initial consult with the nut and she had a "pre-op" eating plan printed to give me - it was about 1600 cals per day and included suggestions for fitness (walking, swimming etc).  Very much like WW if your familiar with that.  I took this to my PCP and she agreed it was a good one for me to follow.  We agreed on the frequency and duration of my activities and she documented everything in my chart.  I went back each month for weigh-ins and checks on my BP (which until recently was elevated).  It was nothing horrible and I did lose about 20-ish pounds prior to surgery.  Hope this helps, Hugs, Chele

My insurance--Cigna--stipulated that it had to be a physician supervised diet for 6 months straight (mine=Feb-July) in the past 2 years. WW, Curves, etc. were not what was required. I hope this helps.
