Protien Question

Hi. My name is Alyssa. I'm from Newport News. I'm new to this site. I had gastric bypass on March 6, 2007. I have a question I hope somebody can help me with. I've been experiencing major hair loss for about a month now. I know it's caused from not getting enough protien. I can't do the shakes because I've become lactose intolerent. I try to get enough but I just can't seem to eat enough. Does anyone know if there is a protien pill or some other alternitive? Thanks.

Hi Alyssa, Welcome to the boards! I'm sorry to hear you are having troubles. There is a product in pill form called Lactaid that you can take for lactose intolerence. It's available in most drug stores and some supermarkets. I mix  my shakes with half water half skim milk. I think  you can take biotin for hair loss but someone else on here can help you better with that as I don't have any problems (knock on wood)

I have been using the Whey Protein Bullets which contain 42 grams of protein. I just put one bullet into my cup of crystal light lemonade. Works great. I have started to lose some of my hair too - I think it is part of the process. I will get worried when I have bare patches. The 75 lbs I have lost are worth it all!

Hi, Alyssa I think the hair loss is inevitable, but meeting protein requirements may have helped. I also started biotin a couple of months pre-op to try to ward it off.  I hope it doesn't start for me until winter months so I can either hibernate or wear really ugly hats. Most protein powders can be mixed with water or Crystal Light, so lactose intolerance shouldn't limit protein intake.  Did you try the ProComplex  Dr T and Dr Clark provide at surgery?  Their nutritionist keeps trying to get me to mix it with milk to increase calories, but I can't do it. Any Whey (The Vitamin Shoppe) has no taste and can be mixed in with practically anything. Good luck!

Hi Alyssa, I'm almost a year out and the first two weeks I didn't have any problem with the shakes.  But, like you, I developed lactose intolerance too.  I take the Lactaid tablet with the first sip of my shake and it doesn't bother me.  I have been lucky to have lost almost 90lbs with no hair loss.  I take a product called hair, skin and nails.  I started it because my nails were getting ridges in them.  My NP said this product had more than enough biotin...1000mg.   Email me and I'll hook you up.  Look forward to hearing from you. Take care, Pat

Prissy,  Where do I get that Bariatric Choice? I would like to try it. I will also check Walmart (my second home) for the biotin pills. Thanks to you and everyone for the suggestions.
