Suffering (warning - do not read just before eatting)

OK folks, everything has gone pretty smoothly since my surgey. However every three to four days when I need a BM, I find myself terribly constipated and in horrible pain. I have had to resort to Dulalax supposatories (SP?) and hours of pain to finally pass it. I've started taking powdered fiber with my protein drink (per my surgeons advice) and continue my Colace but that hasn't helped yet. I don't think I can keep going through this. Advice from those who know?

Poor Mike...sigh.  I have some idea of you're feeling.  I had the same problem a few days after surgery.  I added Benefiber & it helped, although it gave me gas galore.  Since you're already using Colace & the Dulcolax with no relief, then perhaps it would be best to keep pestering your doctor.  This far out from surgery, I wouldn't think it would still be a problem.  But then we've had different procedures so it may be best for me not to advise other than to encourage you to call your doc.  AND I'm pretty sure you'll be hearing from others here with some sound advice. In the meantime, I hope you get to feeling better soon.

Hugs!
Ann

This is a problem for a lot of people post op.  Give it a few days for the things you are trying to kick in maybe.  I also suggest some vit c supplements.  Get some chewables.  I don't really have much more advice but I am sure you will get some.

I've not had this problem. I have HORRID gas pains on the left side. Keep doing what your doc advised. Maybe try some prunes either dried or baby food style or apple juice.

Know exactly what you are going through .  Here  is my remedy .. and it works well for me .  I eat 4 prunes through out the day .  I take at night time 2 stool soffeners  An adult dose of Milk of Magnesia  An adult dose of Mirolax Understand I take a lot .. I mean a lot of Iron and this is what keeps me constipated .  Do not let yourself go for more than 4 days . Consult your doctor . Fecal matter inside of you can make you very sick .. and you may need to be checked for an obstructed bowel .  Keep us posted .  TInk

For a year and a half after my GBS surgery I had this problem. My dr prescribed glycolax, which is now sold over the counter as Miralax. It is tasteless and I mix it with a cup of sugar free kool-aid. No cramps at all. Just regulates you.  At first I had to take it everyday, now just a few times a month. Colace and fiber suppliments didn't work for me.  This stuff is awesome!
