A New Perspective On Losing...

I've been getting caught up on the latests posts, both here & in a couple other places in OH that I haunt.  I have found something very interesting in many of the posts. Ever notice how many times somebody is saying "I've only lost ?? lbs!" Why "only"??? I mentioned this to Mike Oxley, our fellow OHer that's in hospital right now & he related an interesting story that put a whole new twist to this wl stuff. He told me about a couple he knows that both had wl surgery.  They were in a home improvement store.  The wife made the comment "I've only lost 40 lbs so far."  The husband reached over, picked up a 20 lb bag of mulch & started to hand it to his wife.  She said, "I can't lift that thing...it's too heavy!"  Her husband said "Why not?  You were hauling twice that much before your surgery!" Isn't it funny how quickly some of us will deny our accomplishments?  We revel in others successes, but when it comes to our own, many of us use the word "only".  I think that's kinda sad, actually.  So here's what I propose to all of you.  Let's see if we can catch ourselves BEFORE we use that word "only" & just say "I've lost 10 lbs!"  or "I've lost 20 lbs!"  or...well, you get the idea.  Lets OWN our accomplishments & welcome them, no matter how small they may seem. Just a thought to ponder.

Hugs!
Ann

Very profound Ann!  It hit me the big time about the word only, when I realized about 6 weeks or so out that I had lost the equivalent weight to what one of my nephews weighed.  It was pretty amazing.  Even when it seems we are losing slow, and not like everyone else, or when there is a stall etc. we have to remember the big question Could we have done this by ourselves before?  I know I couldn't.

The weight of a nephew, eh?  Hmmm.  So I guess I've lost...what?....would 22 lbs be a two-year-old?  LOL! I have actually caught myself about to say "only" but reined myself back in before it left my lips.  That's just 22 lbs LESS that I have to lose. Could I have done it without the surgery?  My gosh Woman!!!  Are you MAD??????  LOL

Ann, You are SOOOOOO right!  Before surgery I'd celebrate every fraction of a pound that I'd managed to shed...and now I think we have such high expectations that we minimize the wonderful accomplishments that we have had following our surgery.   Let me know what you think of this.... (Ahem - clears throat for effect)... "I'm over the moon to have lost 51.5 pounds since my surgery - nearly 3 months ago!  I'm also thrilled to be off all of my blood pressure meds and celebrated with a chocolate protein shake the fact that I managed to button and zip myself into a pair of size 16 jeans this morning!!  Hot damn, life is good!!! " Better?? I'm also going to take some pictures next week (we're heading to Sarasota and Key West on vacation) so that I can get my face on this board...finally...I've got a new cut and color to show off!   Have a great rest of the week, Hugs, Chele

Yeahhhhh Chele!!!!!!  51.5 lbs & in a size 16??  OMG!   I am soooo proud of you!!!!  And off the meds too.  I can hardly wait to be able to say all that stuff too, though to my credit I have gone from 22s to 18s now.  I tried on my dress for our anniversary celebration to see how it's fitting now.  My sister who's visiting HATES the dress.  Says it doesn't show off my curves....LOL!  Oh well, it's gonna have to do. Vacation in the Keys...you lucky!!!!  And don't tease us about the photo. Yes, Chele, must better!

Hugs!

Ann, Congrats to you too!!!  Being able to buy clothes that start with a "1" is sooooo cool!  These jeans didn't exactly "slide" over the hips, but they're up, buttoned, zipped - and I can sit and breath at the same time...so it's a good day!   My vote is to take your siste shopping and find a curvey dress!!  Retail therapy cures what chocolate used to!   Tomorrow is my real "coming out" party - I'm going to see my mother for the first tims since surgery.  She saw me in May, just prior to my date, and she doesn't know that I went through with the RNY.  She knows I was considering it, and was very supportive, but I chose to surprise her with the results!  This should be an interesting arrival at her house! Have a great week! Michele

I agree with Chele, you are doing fabulously.  And don't pay any attention to your sister.  Sisters are always more critical and never like the same things we do.  If you like the dress and it makes you feel beautiful then go with it.  :)

Chele it sounds like you are doing wonderfully.  I am over the moon with you regarding your success.  A nice Florida vacation huh, I am envious.  Got in good suggestions on places for a Florida honeymoon for me?  A new pic, especially if you have a new do will be wonderful.  Enjoy surprising your mom.  It is always so much fun to show off our hot new bods.  :)

Gosh!  I just love ya'll soooo much.  I always feel better about things when I come here.  I haven't found a local support group yet, so you guys are IT! Chele, your Mom is gonna be soooo surprised!!!!  You go dazzle her with those size 16 jeans, girlie!!!! Ummm, Courtney, how's the wedding plans coming?  Have ya'll set a date yet?  As for my dress, I really do love it.  It's so lacy & simple elegant.  I finally decided NOT to wear a veil.  Just seems kinda silly for somebody my age to wear one, especially since this is a renewal.  Instead, I found a lovely beaded headband at Claire's Boutique at the mall.  And I'm NOT doing the toss the garter & bouquet thing either.  Besides, everybody's already married!  Who's gonna catch 'em?  The horses???  LOL

Hugs!

We have set a date, November 10th will be the big day.  Wedding planning is not going well at all.  We have been runnig into quite a few issues.  I am getting very stressed & discouraged.  My sweetie & I sat and talked a few things over the last few nights and I think we may have finally come up with some solutions to the problems.  Hoping that by Tuesday I will have some things set in stone and can feel a lot better about it all.  The costs & coordinatin of everything is very expensive & frustrating.  Hopefully the new plan we are workng on will work out better.  :) Your dress sounds gorgeous & a beaded headband will be perfect.  I am not doing the veil thing either.  My second marriage, so I am thinking some nice little flowers or something.  We will be doing the bouquet & garter though. :)
