Personal Goal vs Doctor's Goal

Good Morning All, Starting our weight loss journeies our doctors give us there goal weight for us. I myself set my own personal weight. I think my PCP's goal weight is to small (160). My surgeons goal weight is 170 and my personal is just to get in a size 12. I am now 188 wearing a 14. I could settle with being 170. You see to me I am tall my height is 5'7 so I think with my height 160 is just to small for me. My question for you is do you go by your Dr's weight loss goal or do you set your own personal one and just end with that. Or is there some of you just go as low as your body allows you to go?  Mo

Hey Mo!  I chose to not set a number goal.  My goal was to get healthy, follow the eating plan, exercise and lose weight.  My Dr. originally set a goal of 145, there was no way in my mind that that was going to happen, we agreed on 155 as his goal.  I didn't really set my own goal, I figured my body would go where it wants.  I did make it to his goal and now I tend to bounce around from 150 - 155.  I am happy there.  Could I really push things and lose more, yes but I don't want to, I like my body, I like my weight, I like my healthy new life, and I don't feel like I need to pressure myself to go farther.

Mo- My surgeon set a goal of 142 for me....I doubt that will ever happen!  Like you I think that is just way too small for me (5'6"). At my one year appt, they changed my goal to 172...much more realistic I think. SO...I'll get to 172 (Lord willing and the ice cream doesn't win) and then if I keep losing I won't be worried until I get past the surgeon's original goal. I'm like you though...I just wanted to be able to shop ANYWHERE and buy ANYTHING I wanted too.....

Christina Thanks for the response,  Now that my mind is slowly but surely catching up to the image in the mirror. I think I like going to the mall a little more then last week. I still see the fat girl in the mirror, but my clothes are sure nough saying smaller girl. I just don't want to get to small 170 would be nice. but hey I still have 6 more months to get to a year so you never know where my body will be at for my 1 yea anniversary. Mo

My doctor had given me a goal of 160 and for those that have met me know ... NOT .. I surpassed it big time . I was not happy at 160 . I too am 5.7 .  My lowest weight was 120 . I am now up to 132 as I think this looks good for me and is a lot healthier than 120 .  Medically we are only supposed to loose 60 % of our fat weight . I have lost 100 % according to the doc .. Hmmm .  I think you need to go with your body .. and what it feels comfortable at . I am a size 5 . And being honest with you , I love this size . It suits me .. and that is what is important . That where ever you end up at should be a healthy weight , and one that you feel good in your skin .  At 6 months out , I had lost 100 pounds . And I went on to loose another 100 .. now mind you I stated at 325 . Just keep on using your tool . Be healthy .. strive to keep it healthy .. ,and you will land where you want .  Take care ,  Tink

I set my own goal, and when I fell below it, I went to the doc's goal.  and that is where I have maintained.

I am 5'4" (actually, 5'4" 1/2, sometimes 5'5" depending on who is measuring), and my surgeon and I spoke extensively about what a reasonable goal was based on my height, frame, overall body style (I have always had a very large chest no matter what weight I was at), past attempts at weight loss, etc. We decided that 140 would be a good goal. I am going to try my best for 125, but I know that at 140 I look fabulous and feel good as well, and I was able to maintain that weight for a while in the past.

Hiyas Mo....wow you are looking great girlfriend!!! Way to go!!  My docs goal weight for me is below as well as my personal goal.  I really am just going to see how I feel at docs goal and maybe stop there but I am only 5'2" so I feel 132-135 is doable.   Anna
