Do you have to wait before going swimming? I'd like to use the pool at the Y, but couldn't remember how long to wait after surgery, i'm almost 3 weeks out...

Hi there! First, I suggest you call your surgeon's office for their suggestion. Next, if I remember correctly it is 3-4 weeks post-op for swimming and such as you want your incisions to be healed and even in the shower not letting the water beat down on them until they are healed properly. Lastly, I LOVE swimming so thankfully my surgery was in Jan so I didn't have to tempt myself!

Thanks Kat, I only made it to the base pool twice this summer, but we spent alot of time at the indoor pool at the Y last winter and all spring, i'll look for my discharge paperwork and then if i can't find that i'll email my surgeon...

My doc told me to wait until my incision had completely healed and the scabs were gone. The concern is that if you still have an open wound, then any germs in the water can get immediately into the deep layers of skin, which would be a bear to treat. I was probably about 3 weeks out when I felt my scap was almost completely gone and I went swimming. But I agree with KK that it would be best to confirm with your doc first. Joe
