Why are we supposed to take 30 minutes to eat?

I cannot stretch it out that long- I only eat 2 ozs of protein ! I don't have enough time in the day to get everything done if I took 30 mins toeat 2 ozs and waited 30 mins later to start drinking liquids. I don't remember being told why , just that we should.

I was never told to take 30 minutes to eat 2 oz.  My literature says NOT to take that long, that 15 minutes was the max.  I think the lit assumes if you're taking too long you're actually eating more than you should.  When the nutritionist told me to get more calories in and that I could eat more than 2 oz at a time, she said it was okay to take more than 15 minutes for dense proteins like meats. I try to take 15 minutes for soft proteins like  2 oz of cheese or 6 oz  of yogurt and 20-30 minutes for 3-4 oz of meat, chicken, fish.  The timing concept is for when your satiety nerves revive and you want to make sure you don't finish your food before you feel full - prevents overeating. The real key is to take small bites, chew well, swallow and wait before taking another bite. Don't eat mindlessly.

To teach you to slow down and listen to your body! :-) Also, it forces you to chew better...to prolong things.  Just take it slow....

Basically  because our pouches are so small and since our nerves  are healing in the beginning, we are supposed to eat slow so that we don't feel our pouches to fast and too much.  It takes about 20 minutes for the signals that we are full to reach the brain.  By eating slowly we chew better (less chance of something getting stuck) and we are better able to read the signal that we are full.  Getting overly full & eating too fast is a nasty feeling.  For me when it happens I feel horrible for anywhere to 20 minutes to an hour after and it is so hard to keep functioning when you feel miserable and just want to crawl in the corner.

You should always take time to eat your food after GBS . This way your pouch stays fuller , and youare able to get in all of the protein you need for your feeding at that time .  You must wait to drink as you do not want to flush the food out of your pouch .  I hope that you follow the rules, as you will be successful. I do know of those that do not follow the pouch rules and have suffered gain back of their weight .  Use the tool and always try to stick to the times given by your surgeon for your meal time . Trust me , you will be successful if you do .  Tink
