I don't recall the author but I read a book someone loaned me titled  Whistling in the Dark.  It was fantastic.  I have tried to write something to tell you more but everything I try gives it away.  Another recommenation is We are all Welcome Here - set in the 1960s a mother who survived polio and gave birth while in an iron lung and her daughter against the world, and sometimes one another.
