How has your journey been?  I want to give you some advise.   I thought I had a way of tasting foods that I wanted but, knew I could not swallow.  I would eat things that I want as a chew and spit method.   I now am learning that when you do this your pouch and intestines start creating the acid needed to digest the food you are chewing.   This is NOT good.  I am sure it may help for some people.  But, it is not a good idea.  If you develop uclers you WILL have problems. I developed uclers in my small instestines about 7 months after my by pass surgery.  I was still chewing and spitting.  My uclers never have healed and now I have a 3rd ucler.  The pain from the uclers are severe and I have not been able to work for almost 3 weeks.  I have had a biopsy done for Helicobacter Pylori infection.  The medication for the ulcers are very expensive.   I am not trying to scare anyone.  I just want to share my experience.  My doctor is telling me that there are only 2 solutions to fix this if the uclers continue not to heal.  He can reconstruct the small instestine, remove the ulcers and reattach to the pouch or he can reverse the gastric bypass and hook up the old stomach.  I am so terrified to have the surgery reversed.  I told my doctor I would live off of Protein Shakes, eggs and chicken broth before I let him reverse the surgery. Please pray for me.  Let me know if anyone else has had Ulcers.  Do they ever heal? I still remember how exciting it is to share my weight loss and journey with others.   Lately, I have been reluctant to share my journey with anyone.

Laura,   I don't know if this could help, but I am having the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectom(VSG)soon and was just wondering if this procedure might be the answer to your ulcer problem, without compromising your weight loss.  I am glad you brought up this subject, as I have never thought about this possible complication to "tasting" and spitting out food.  The VSG is rescrictive only, yet rivals the RNY in weight loss.  Maybe you could talk to your doctor and visit the VSG FAQ on the VSG forum to learn more.  Hope this will help Jenny

Jenny, Thanks for your reply.   Do you mind me asking how your doctor decided you need the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectom?  I have gotten this information from several people.  At least now I do not feel like I am in a bubble trying to figure out what is wrong and how to fix it.  I am really getting tired of protein shakes, eggs, yogurt, cup of soup and milk soaked wheat chex or oatmeal.  That diet is enough to depress anyone. I know ulcers can heal and they can come back.  I just do not think I can live for years with the pain and suffiering when they flare up.  I have missed 3 weeks of work now and for 3 weeks before I went on medical leave I worked in daily pain.  My job is hanging by a thread.  I can not even talk to my manager, she does not understand and blames me for having the surgery and putting myself through all this. If feeling bad is not enough, now I have to worry about my job. I may call my doctor in the morning to talk to him about this surgery.  I do not think my job or my will power can go through another flare up. Well, thanks for the response and the shoulder today.

Laura,

The reason I chose the VSG is because I wanted Simple.  So I kept looking for alternatives to the RNY.  The VSG is everything I want, and nothing I don't.  I have heard of many revisions to the VSG from the LapBand, but I am curious what your doctor said about a revision from RNY to VSG. Jenny

While there are no true cure for ulcers, you can bandage them so you can live and eat . I am almost 4 years post op from RNY . I have ulcers . I take daily Nexium and Carafate . These drugs help to bandaid my ulcers so I can eat and live .  Please do not hesitate to ask you doc about these medicines . They do work , and are less evasive than a reversal .  Best to you .  Natalie

Natalie, Thanks for your reply.  I have been on Carafate, Protonix and Prevacid for over a year now.  Just when I start to feel better and introduce my pouch to solid foods within 4 weeks I am bloated, constipated, and usually the pain in the belly is starting to double me over. Do you mind me asking how you deal with your uclers?  How long have you had them?  How many did you, or do you have?  Do they come back? I know they can come back. I have had a lot of people tell me about a surgery to cut the vagus nerve.  I may call my doctor in the morning to talk to him about this.  I do not think my job or my will power can go through another flare up. Well, thanks for the response and the shoulder today. Laura
