hi i am new, considering surgery, wandering if anyone has bc\bs of va and had any problem with approval for surgery, would really like to know !! thanks
I had BCBS - now mind you this was almost 3 years ago . I was approved with in 4 hours . I had several co-morbibs . Do you more you can share - such as your weight now , your comorbids .. this will help to know what the insurance company will approve you on .
Hope you get your approval .

thank you for replying so fast natalie, my husband has bc/bs of kentucky thru his employer and i was covered on that plan, but weight loss surgery was an exclusion no mattter what the case......so i took an individual plan thru the state ffor myself and the policy states weight loss surgery is a covered sevice but i dont know the buts about it yet, cause i have not even been referred yet, i was just checking to see if anyone else has had a problem with bc/bs of va forst , before i got my hopes up... so thank you,,,,,, my bmi is about 46, i dont have may comorbs except my bmi, and back problems, and starting to have some edema in legs.......
When I was on my ex husbands bc/bs policy there was an exclusion. Sugery wasnt an option at that point. When I got my own policy thru the state I just had to meet the 40 bmi requirement or 35 w/ other health problems. I got approved almost immediately on this policy. They told me the requirements when I called. That was the first step in the process for my surgeons office. Hope you get the information you need.

hi , well it kinda sounds like we had the same problem, i was covered withmy husbands bc/bs of ky plan , but weight loss surgery was an exclusion no matter what the case, so i took an individual plan in va that does cover the surgey but i dont know the conditions yet, i just didnt want to get anxious about the surgery, then get let down, so i wanted to check with other people to see if anyone had any problem with an individual plan in va,, any input will getaly be appreciated......i am 32 years old, my bmi is about 45 or 46, have back problems, but thats about it so far.......i just want to get some help fpr myself before my health gets worser...... thanks alot
Hi,
I have BC BS standard option as a retired federal employee. I was approved within a week after the bariatric surgeon's office called my carrier, based upon my BMI being over 40, without including my co morbidities. Even though I was initially told by my surgeon's office that my fills weren't covered by BC BS, we have now found they are after my office visit co pay. I have been thrilled that BC BS has paid so much for me!
I had BCBS Fed and was approved in a couple of days.......... but it was the federal employee one - no issues with them at all - good luck!
My suggestion would be to call them and ask them if they cover it and what the requirements are and then you will know where you stand and what you need to do from there - we are all here to help if we can...

thanks to all of u *****sponded so fast,,,, someone ask wha twas my bmi and did i have any comorb---- well my bmi 45 and i dont really have any health problems besides back trouble right now, but have a family history of high blood pressseure and diabetes,,,,,,,
i was covered ubder my husbands plan but there was an exclusion on weight loss surgery,, so i took an individual paln out for myself bc\bs of va and it is suppose to pay for the surgery but i just didnt know what the exceptions woulf be, so i guess that is why i am asking if u all had this insurance and if u had any problems with approval before i start the whole process.....
