Do ya think spagetti o's is soup....
Y'know, I'm honestly a little confused by the answers. I agree that it makes sense to hold off, just because your tummy isn't ready for anything that thick or hard to digest. But in terms of healthy eating, what you're supposed to be eating right now isn't all that wonderful anyway. Most non-solid soups aren't all that nutritious. Puddings and popsicles? Not so much either. The shakes are probably the most important thing, and I can see why you wouldn't want to chug those exclusively for weeks on end. Should you eat Spaghettios once you have more options? You should definitely be choosing more nutritious options. But right now, NONE of your options are all that fantastic by comparison. If it weren't for the consistency, I'd say go for it.
to the contrary, the bean soup that I made was a great protein and the chicken soup as well. All the folks who weighed in on this post (sorry, no un intended) are experienced at post-op eating and really get how important that early stage is.....the tummy is swollen for up to six months post-op, needs easy stuff early on. Pasta and rice apparently swell up in the stomach. Ouch! Also note that as I mentioned per my surgeon, carbs are a bad idea early on....you have VERY little room post-op, you have got to get protein in. (important for healing and may slow up or alleviate hair loss) This is not just my opinion, but cumulatively reporting back what I have read on OH for ten months now....this is not to mention the fact that you are RETRAINING your brain to make good food choices, and Spagetti Os would not be on any nutritionist's list. Good luck, Gail
I'll admit I'm not experienced at this yet, but I'm just going by what I've seen people say they ate at this stage. Several people have talked about tomato soup, and when I compare nutritional values of tomato soup to this, the soup is not better. Yes, your bean and the chicken soup would be higher in protein. But the OP says this person doesn't like soup, so she was asking for other options, something soup-like, and I was trying to see whether her idea was really so completely out to lunch. Again, compared to some of the things I've seen people talk about, it doesn't seem that bad, nutritionally speaking.
As for completely avoiding carbs, a lot depends on the nutritionist, it seems. Cornell University's dietary guidelines for VSG patients includes carbs. They say start with proteins, of course, and then move on to veggies, fruits and good carbs. Here's their suggestion for diet for the first two weeks after surgery. Cereal or pureed fruits for breakfast, tuna or eggs for lunch, pureed fruits or cottage cheese for snack (depending on what you had for breakfast) and blended souffle and mashed potatoes for dinner. (I know - it's surprising that they have people on pureed foods so early - their gastric bypass diet also does that.)

Anyway, thanks for explaining.
I'm betting the Tomato Soup isn't Campbell's. My doc's office sells a product called "Crem-O-Lite" soup, and one is the tomato flavor.

As you can see, it's high protein and only 2g of carbohydrates.
Since we're supposed to keep carbs between 20-40 g, even a 4oz serving of Spaghetti-Os would put you at about 20g of carbohydrates. Not Good. :)

Man, those look about as appetizing as hornet's nest stew!
Anyway, the OP comes from someone who is 7 days from surgery. She won't manage 4 oz. Maybe 2. And as long as she's "good" on carbs the rest of the day...
Seriously, the one thing I hate to see is people get on a "diet" mentality after surgery. IME, it's very like religion. The instant you get "legalistic" about things, you are bound to start breaking the rules. It's the nature of the human beast. Adam and Eve, even before the fall, couldn't keep ONE rule! LOL. My nut used to tell me that there is no such thing as a forbidden food. It's all about balance. If you really, really love something that isn't really a good match for your eating plan, it's OK to go ahead and have it now and then, just make adjustments with the rest of the meals that day to allow for it.

It's still about doing what's best for your health. Pushing something like that at 7 days is a BAD idea. If you're on liquids, it needs to be "LIQUIDS"; not liquidy-solidy...
There is a reason, and it's all about healing.
