Lost 50lbs but not even one dress size

I am getting pretty depressed about this. I lost 50lbs but I haven't even gone down one dress size. I still pretty much wear the same size I did 50lbs ago. How is that even possible? How much weight will I actually have to lose to go down one dress size????

I know for me, this will probably be the case because I am in a 30/32 from Avenue but there are a lot of shirts I have bought over the years that don't fit around my mid section so when I start losing weight, I will be able to fit in those shirts, the same size I've been in for a while. Everyone's body shape is different. Are you at least noticing those same size clothes getting loser in some areas? Like the bust area maybe or arms? It will happen, don't worry, you will wake up one morning and it will be too big!

Maggie,
I am still wearing my size 24's after losing from my all time high of 315. 50lbs total so far....however my clothes are loose now instead of snug. I am trying not to be discouraged I know in time i will finally say goodbye to plus sizes and i cant wait to see one-derland. Hang in there Maggie...

Oh Hugs Maggie and others. I feel you. I too lost almost 50 lbs before changing sizes. Don't let this plague your minds too much. You must keep in mind a few factors---first off, the sizes for "plus beauties" seem to have larger "spaces" between the sizes, meaning a larger span of shapes and sizes can be in 20s and up. Next, the styles for the "Lovely Lotsas" are not the most form fitting---they're more "tent-like". Granted, the style selections are better than they were 15 years ago, but still. Finally, for me, I gravitated toward knit and stretchy for comfort's sake---and no matter your size there, they can fit through several sizes.

Did you take measurements pre-surgery? If so, take new ones now, and you'll see the inches are off. If not, now is a good time to get your measurements because they can be very valuable when you start "stalling but losing inches" stages.

And encourage yourself in hope---once you get down past the 20s, the sizes seem to fall much quicker---like I was only in 18s for 3 weeks, 16s for 3 or 4 weeks; so it will get better very soon, I promise!

I agree with Rhonda.. It wasn't until I lost 50 lbs and actually went and bought new clothes that anyone even noticed, it was very depressing.   The strechy material of my 20-22's  just went down with my size.  I lost from my leggs, and butt first,  then my top... finally it started to come off the middle section.

Are you exercising?  that helps tighten up and get rid of the visceral fat in the abdominal area.  it seems to be the last to go for me.

Have you tried on clothes at a store?  You might be surprised to be down several sizes.

What another poster said about sizes is true. Plus sizes are about 20-25 pounds from one size to another (smaller sizes are 10 pounds between sizes). If you think about it -- if you are in 28's and they are tight (meaning you should have been in 30's), you would need to lose about 50 pounds to move down a size (20 for the size you should be in, 20 for the size you are in, plus probably 10 or more to be comfortable in the next size down). Remember, too, that new close are not stretched out, so they will fit more snugly. If the close you are in have 'stretch fabric' in them, this gets stretched out as you wear it, too (meaning you can wear it as you gain weight, where if you went to buy it new, you would probably have to get the next size up).

Does that make sense? :) Measurements are a good thing! I feel your pain -- I am losing, too, but I am still in the same sizes. They are getting loose, but not quite time to move down a size. Soon, I hope, for both of us!

Good Morning, Maggie!

Congratulations on the loss of fifty pounds of excess weight.  You are doing well with your sleeve!  I bet you feel a whole lot better without that significant amount of excess weight!  Perhaps you even find it easier to move around, climb stairs, exercise, etc.  I bet you look and feel better than you did 50 pounds ago.

I know that you want, as most of us do, to be able to fit into smaller sizes.  Everything that others have said so far is absolutely true and you probably already know it, in your head at least.  However, your heart is a different matter that is just as important.  I would suggest that you write a list of what smaller sized clothing means to you.  Does it mean success?  Does it mean you must look better?  Does it mean you are more “normal”?  After you're done, look at the list and ask yourself if it's possible that you may already be feeling those things without actually having gone down a size.  Maybe that will help you to not feel so frustrated.  Also, if you're like many of us, you have a closet full of clothes that never fit right or that you outgrew.  Take another look at the clothes in that closet and try them on; I bet you find at least a few things that you can add to your wardrobe.  Shopping in your own closet is one of the best things in the world!

Have a Super Sunday!

My husband has lost 45 lbs.  He is still wearing the same clothes but they are fitting looser.  In the last year he had gained about 15 lbs, so some of his clothes were definitely getting too tight and now they are fitting better or some are loose.
He doesn't need to go buy new clothes yet, just move in his belt a notch.  I think with men there is less of a preconceived notion about what "size" you are wearing.
He can feel the difference in moving and walking going from 450 to 403.  That is what is important.  I'm hoping he can wait until January to buy new clothes because we are kind of broke until bonus!
