I Hate Protein Shakes

Well I saw my doc today (1st post-op) and he said I'm coming right along. I asked about the new-whey protein bullets and he said, Yes you can use them BUT you will only be getting about 1/3 of the 42 grams. WHY? Because it's collagenic protein and your body will not absorb all 42 grams. What's in the shakes is another kind of protein that the body absorbs. TMI!!!!! Bottom line, I won't waste my $$ on them. However, they did give me a protein powder sample called Chike and I must say it wasn't bad at all. No funky smell and it went down pretty easily. The web site is -
www.chikenutrition.com  . Their phone number is 877-974-2537. I will be ordering some of that to supplement the food when I need to. As for the fish, he recommended tuna in water, tilapia,Chilean sea bass, flounder and sole all baked or poached. Soft and flaky for this soft food phase I start tomorrow. Veggies are secondary to protein. I've been using the Benefiber powder in my shakes but I sincerely believe the pooping thing is reliant upon me drinking the protein shakes because guess what, I had 3 servings yesterday and today.  Hope that helps. Keep me posted!

Youre right, its the smell! My doctor says I cant go on solid foods until week 4. BUT, I did break down a couple times. I ate a grilled cheese, maybe the size of a quarter and a half of cheese stick. BIG MISTAKE! It's just not agreeing with me. I'm starting to wonder if I'll ever be able to eat again! What did everyone elses doctor say about eating solid food- at what week can you start? I got really really sick last night. I wasn't able to eat anything at all yesterday. Just  H2O and a little powerade. It's hard to throw up when there isn't anything there! Seriously, is my stomach ever going to be able to hold food again???

I thought I was bold with those tiny shrimp but you are really a brave soul. Bread & cheese!! You are a braver woman then me. I think the need to chew on SOMETHING,ANYTHING overpowered us. Did your doc say you could have soft mushy starting tomorrow? I know for sure I can't start solid food until March so if your doc says 4 weeks, I wish you luck. Please keep me posted on how that goes.

Lynnndaaaaaaaaaaa , :)

Before my surgery I was able to drink the protein powder shakes also. I bought about $100 worth of powder shakes pre-op. I thought, "ya know, this really isn't going to be bad." But, the moment I woke up from surgery, my taste for things changed completely. Even water doesn't taste the same to me anymore. It's so weird. I may be a "special case" But, make sure you don't buy all your mixes pre-op thinking you'll drink them after your sx. Your buds just might change. I don't want to sound like a "debbie downer" I just regret spending that type of money on something that I won't drink now.

Nooooooo not a downer at all !  Thank you for the advice !  You are so right and I would have done that ... bought a bunch once I had my surgery date (Monday I get it yay) !  So what SHOULD I do ?  Have a couple bullets and a couple of each type or one of each to try after ?
GOAL !

I have hated most protein powders but just recently tried Matrix by Syntrax. It's wonderful. I add it to Mootopia Low Carb milk to get an extra 12 grams of protein on top of the protein in the powder. I add a bit of ice and it is yummy and not gritty. I do blend it.

THank you, I'll have to try that drink! As for what to buy before hand.....my hospital actually sent me home with maybe 15 different samples. You might want to check in with your doctor to see if they will do that for you also. That way, you can try a few they give you and go from there. I also had a few others at home waiting for me, just single servings of this or that. But, havn't touched them :( Even the samples they gave me at the hospital. I just can't do it :( I tried to eat a scrambled egg today but, was only able to get maybe an 1/8 of it down. But, that's a little more protein than I've been getting in a while!

G2 is great! I'm really glad I found that stuff.....I really like the kiwi strawberry one. Even though I'm not getting any protein from it, I feel like I'm getting some electrolytes.

Guys, if you eat solid food (or even mushy food) too soon, you risk getting a leak in your staple line. Please stop being "brave", you are scaring me!
