You lose a few months after surgery and the loss stops fairly quickly.
Of course as soon as the loss starts, ppl spend a fortune on loss products, but the process stops naturally anyway. There was some study that's periodically posted to the main board and it says its your protein and iron levels at the time directly after surgery that affect it the most. I dunno, I still haven't seen a person that hasn't lost hair. It happens, and it DOES grow back.
But definately strengthen and take care of your hair so that that which does stay doesn't break off.
Keep your scalp happy and moisturized as well, and pamper it to death.
Good luck with the products.
Try the Phyto products. They are expensive but they work. I started to loose my hair after diagnosed with Diabetes.
Right now I use the Phyto leave in serum, I buy at Beauty First or Nordstrom, Boitin 2500 and some other serum that is also leave in once a week (made from placenta) I buy it at Sally's. My hair has not fallen out any more than normal but I am only 4 weeks out.
I have really long, beautiful hair. It's kind of defined me for a long time. (I've even had an offer from Ojong hair products several years ago to model on the shopping channel for their products) At any rate, as you can tell - my hair is like my crowning glory and boy - is it falling out!!!
Hair is EVERYWHERE. I have to declog the shower every time, and it comes out in clumps. It's so sad. It started right on the 10 week mark, and it's been thinning out ever since.
From everything I've read, it will come back. So I'm not panicking. And besides - I'd rather be skinny in a wig, than fat with my real hair!! LOL
Good Luck hon. Us girls and our hair..... I feel your pain
Hugs!!!

The type of hair loss experienced after WLS is called acute telogen effluvium. How much hair will be lost varies from person to person, but the only way to prevent it is to not have surgery. However, you could lose even more hair than what would be caused by the surgery alone if you don't get enough protein in your diet post-op (that's the "crash diet" hair loss part).
The hairs lost from surgery will start falling out about 2-3 months after the surgery, and will start growing back within six months. Hair products and topical treatments won't stop the hair loss caused by the surgery, but they can help encourage faster regrowth of new hairs that come in after the lost hairs, and help make the remaining hairs look thicker, which will cover more of the scalp than thinner hairs. Taking certain vitamins can also help the new hairs to grow faster.
I've researched this like crazy, hoping to find a way to prevent it, but it is what it is. Once I accepted that I can't prevent the surgery-induced hair loss, I started looking into wigs. If I have a lot of hair loss, then I've already decided I'll get a pixie cut and find me a nice little wig to try out. There are some really cute wigs out there that I wouldn't mind wearing as I'm waiting for those new hairs to grow out. I'm particularly drawn to this wig.
The loose skin concerns me way more than the hair loss, because I know the lost hairs will grow back without me having to pay thousands of dollars to a plastic surgeon...
