Isopure and itchy throat after drinking like allergies
I am approximately 2 weeks pre-op and last night I bought some Isopure (various flavors) to try. My doc wants me on a liquid diet BEFORE and AFTER the surgery.
I decided to go ahead and integrate liquid protein into my diet before starting to full on liquid diet and chose breakfast since I don't eat breakfast anyway.
This morning, I opened a bottle of the Isopure Alpine Punch and drank about 1/4 of it by sipping. (By the way, I think it is vile *shudder*)
Anyway, as I was drinking it I got an itchy throat like you do with hay fever. I have also experienced this when I make Carnation instant breakfast with skim milk. In fact, pretty much when I drink milk I feel this way. I am not lactose intolerant but it does make my throat feel itchy. I don't go into anaphylactic shock or anything when I have milk but I didn't continue drinking more of the Isopure because it made me somewhat nervous.
Unfortunately for me, I do not really feel this with butter and cheese nor with products made with milk. I am wondering if it is the whey protein that is doing it to me.
I am also wondering whether anyone else has experienced this and what they used in lieu of whey.
I do not want to use soy under any cir****tances.

I posted this in another thread earlier. If you can not tolerate whey (or just plain can't find anything you like) it is 100% possible to make protein drinks without it. All it takes is some greek yogurt and some milk. Here's what I do, and you can experiment with the amounts:
1/2 to 1 cup of Greek yogurt
1/2 to 1 cup of milk (i usually do one for one measurements of milk to yogurt). I use the Hood Calorie Countdown because it's way lower in calories and carbs.
To that I add whatever flavoring I want. You can use extracts, sugar free syrups (like Torani's or Davinci's), sugar free jello or jello pudding mix (around 1 tablespoon sometimes less, just add it to taste), peanut butter or PB2 (http://www.bellplantation.com/ ). The only limit is your imagination. Whizz it all together really good in a blender or with an immersion blender and, there you go. Protein without the whey.
You can also use cottage cheese if you blend it up reaaaaaaally well. Early out I had to put it in a shaker bottle after mixing it up because it took me forever to drink it and it sometimes ended up needing to be mixed back up, or i'd have to put part of it in the fridge for awhile.
Edit to add: I got the idea for this from our lovely Ms Shell. Anyway, hope it helps.

Great suggestions! I'm just worried about what to do during the "clear liquid" phase for protein. I have an appt with a nutritionist Friday so I am going to ask about alternatives.
I also got some samples of protein powder from the Vitamine Shoppe and it stinks :P I guess I never knew it smelled bad until then.

Sounds like the food allergies i get...and i'm glad you brought it up! I could never understand WHAT made my throat itch whenever I would use supplemental nutrition bars (Tiger's Milk...) or RTD protein shakes.
I've just got the 'a-ha' moment. I will need to experiment again w/product that contain whey and ones that don't to see.
And, i hear whey is the 'better' protein for you....does anyone know why?

My 2cents worth:
I loved the Isopure pre-mixed bottles (look like Snapple) before I was sleeved. Afterwards, I haven't been able to drink them at all. I am now repulsed by the taste of them and the stringy "floaties" that seem to always be present. I'm glad I didn't buy a bunch of them which I was planning to do. I know that doesn't help at all, but I just wanted to share.
