removing the jp drain....
i get my jp drain removed tomorrow, i'm sooo excited, this thing is sooooo annoying!! 2 weeks with a tube sticking out is waaay too long!!!
now i'm thinking... theres stitches holding it in... and a wide open wound where its coming out from... this is gonna hurt!! i know its a super strange, uncomfortable feeling, but does it actually hurt when they take the stitches out?? also how much/long does the inscision hurt after its out? will i be able to FINALLY sleep on that side? (its on my left side).
my surgeon also told me he was taking the steri strips off the same day... i thought they fell off on their own? i dont really want anyone tugging on these things!

You poor thing..I think I am literally the luckiest VSG'er out there..they took my drain out in the hospital before I left..it wasn't draining at all so it seemed silly to leave it in...
It definitely wasn't comfortable when they took it out...but it wasn't exactly painful...it was just horrible weird and I didn't like it, but just think...you'll be able to sleep in peace!!

Two Weeks! GAH! You poor little thing! I had mine out the second day and I was chomping at the bit to get it out. It was "uncomfortable" lol! It felt like a tiny snake slithering, it was weird but not painful. I started to tear up but Im a weenie, so don't go by me.
I felt so much better having it out, its been 2 weeks and its starting to close up now. It really freaked me out to look at it and change the gauze and stuff but again like I said, Im a weenie!
Good luck sweetie!

I agree - Mr. JP and I had a love/hate relationship. I loved him because he prevented blood clots from remaining in my body. The hate was that I hated carting him around every where I went!
I had my JP drain removed at my surgeon's office 9 days from surgery. I also had stitches around the site to hold the JP drain in. All I can tell you is the removal of the tubes was nothing compared to the discomfort when the doctor removed the stitches. Please ask your doctor to numb the area a bit before the removal of the stitches. I was in pain for three days after the stitches and tube were removed. Once the pain subsided, I was actually able to look at the site and the wound was pink and beginning to close up. I have to keep a bandaid on it for about one week, just in case of a little fluid leakage from the site. I am now, 4 days after the drain removal, able to sleep on that side but it's still not 100%. Otherwise, all is good :)
I don't know what steri strips are -- my doctor used stitches and glue on all of my incisions. The stitches dissolve on their own and the glue eventually flakes off.
You'll be OK, just breathe :)

I couldn't imagine dealing with that thing for 2 weeks. The only "discomfort" that I had post-surgery was that drain. The moment it came out (2 days later), it was a relief and I started to feel even better.
When they took it out, it was very quick. I didn't even feel them "pop" the stitches, but another girl in the hospital with me said that she felt a "pinch" with the stitches. I couldn't even call the feeling uncomfortable. It was just weird.....really weird! I could feel it snaking through my insides on the way out and it was much longer then I thought it would be. The doc had me take a deep breath and on exhale, he pulled it out and voila! Before I even finsihed my exhale, it was over and boy does it feel good to have that thing gone!
You will do fine and will be amazed at how much better you feel. I'm 8 weeks out and still have a little scab where the drain was, but it hasn't bothered me for quite some time now. I've been sleeping on my left side since I got home from the hospital, but for about 1 week I would wake up to roll over. After that, I slept through the night without waking. I do have a "numb" spot under my incision that I don't remember being there immediately after surgery. It took a while to get used to because my pants and shirts rubbing on it with that num/tingly feeling was more bothersome then any pain from the incision.

I had my jp removed the day I left the hospital - so that was day 5 po. I had one stitch holding mine in and didn't even feel that come out. The resident that removed mine told me there are two type of JP - one that is the round tube all the way to the end and one that ends in more of a flat tape. The round one is the easiest to take out because its the same all the way down (this is the one I had). The tape type may be a bit more uncomfortable because its a different shape than the hole they're pulling it through.
I felt a little flutter at my sternum and it was out. Some gauze over the hole and in one day it already looked closed up.
Steri strips are the devil - I had an allergic reaction and started peeling them off myself - they were all off by day 10 I believe and I felt soooo much better - you'll be fine.
Good luck!!

I must be weird because I couldn't feel my drain being pulled out at all. I asked the nurse in disbelief if it was out already! I think I didn't feel mine because my tummy was a bit numb from the surgery. I was a revision from band to sleeve so there was more work done... I don't know if that had anything to do with it or not.
I am very glad I had the drain because all the stuff that drained out really didn't need to be lingering in my body. They pulled my drain out right before my discharge from the hospital, 2 days after my surgery.
You will be fine! And you'll have a story to tell ;)

Just have to say that this made me just sick... the idea of a drain, the reality...ugh it was enough to keep me hitting the morphine pump. Shudder. Wow - I know they are a good precaution but UGH, I have to say that was one of the worst things ever. Would rather have a root canal. And I was lucky, mine out 2 days post op right before I left the hospital too!
yup, totally not that bad. dr. had me lay down and started rippin' off my steri-strips. (yes, ripping, lol) it actually felt kind of good, like a nice good scratch :o)
then he just went over to the drain, took of the pads, and clipped off the stiches, pulled it (someone said something about their dr. stopping, mine did the same thing, i was like nooo keep going!!!) and it was out... then he clipped more stiches, pulled a couple out which was actually the worst part! those things sting!!
now the site feels weird kind of - but man am i glad it's out!!! the incision sites tingle a bit, i kind of wish he would have left the strips on, i cant stand to see my stomach cut up like that, creeps me out!!
