Hematoma draing through incision!!!

as some of you may remember -- i have a baseball sized hematoma under one of my incisions..  due to the port removal of the band.  tonight i was bathing my son and realized blood was coming from somewhere.. there is very thick and very dark blood just oozing from the corner of one of my incisions.  it just keeps coming out...   My husband and I are sure it's the hematoma draining instead of my body reabsorbing..  really creepy..

anyone experienced anything like this before??

I do have a previously schedule appointment in the morning for them to check the hematoma..

I developed a hematoma also right next to my largest incision.  I also freaked out about the seeping.  Called my surgeon and got the doctor on call who told me that I could go to the hospital and they would lance it and drain it OR I could just let it seep and it would probably drain within 2-3 days.  Just told me to keep a bandage over the site to collect the drainage.  I decided I didn't want to have it lanced and drained so I just kept pressing on the site and it gushed out and I just kept pressing on it and it drained out overnight.  It didn't hurt or anything...it was just a bother to keep pressing on it to drain it.  It wasn't fresh blood because it was dark and it didn't smell or have an odor so it wasn't infected.

Just keep it dressed to protect your clothes and see your doctor in the morning and you should be okay.

Loving my sleeve!!

I am so glad that this has happened to someone else.. lol    no one mentioned the posibility of it draining -- just kept saying my body would reabsorb it ..  so i just wasn't prepared for this to happen.        i'll  be glad when it's done -- it's been probably the most painful part since the initial surgery and that first 72 hours...

Thanks!

I wasn't from WLS but another one but I had a hematoma on my belly and it came out my belly button! Now that was a shocker! Just to be safe my PCP had me come in and put something on it to make it clot and I was fine but yep it was a very strange sensation to have it pouring out my belly button!

I also had a hematoma where my port was removed.  I didnt even realize I had it.  I just had terrible bruising there.  I went to have my staples removed 6 days after my surgery.   I was standing at the reception desk afterwards and looked down and I was totally covered in blood.  My shirt was soaked and it was all over my jeans.   Thank goodness I was wearing a black shirt, instead of a white one, or people would have thought I had gotten stabbed.  I have never seen so much blood.   I was just glad it happened in the doctors office instead of on my way home in the car or when I got home.  I would have freaked out.   They took me back ito an exam room and my surgeon said it was a hematoma.   They did get some of the  hematoma to come out.  He put some stiitches in it and said it would probably drain for 2 to 3 days.  It ended up draining for around 5 days.  I was having to change the gauze bandages 3-4 times a day because iit was soaking thru.  When I went back after 9 days to have the stitches removed, I thought it was fine.  Then I got what looked like 2 blisters on the incision.   When I went in for my 1 month checkup, my surgeon opened up the blisters and said I would have to have a home health nurse come once a day and clean and pack them.   I did that for 6 days.   Its all healed now, but it was definiitely not fun.    Good luck with your doctors appt tomorrow.

wow mallrat -- i bet that was scary..      it has finally stopped bleeding for now..  we will see what they say. :)  sorry yours was so rough --  did your VSG have to be open? I ask since you mentioned staples. i was just closed witht he glue which my skin apparently doesn't like at all.

i just hope this hematoma part is done and over and they take care of it or it does itself quickly.

Thanks everyone for the reassurance!

Yes, I had exactly the same thing happen when they took my band out last year. I got a huge hematoma under the incision where my port was. It was gawd awful painful- sent me into ER- and then it oozed out of the incision site. I hope this doesn't happen to you, but I will tell you what happened to me so you won't be shocked just in case: When I went to the doctor, she had to open up that incision and a huge gush of bloody fluid came out- wear something that can get dirty- and then she had to pack it up, and then I had to change the packing daily until it healed up from the inside out. That took a couple of months. Not fun. I hope this doesn't happen to you, but if it does- you will make it through. Rough times, but you will be fine. So sorry you are going through this. PM me if you need to talk. HUGS XOXOX

Yeah -- it's oozing through the site..  finally got it to stop last night -- then in the shower t his morning it started pouring again!   I have an appt in about 2 hours.. so we'll see what they do.  It doesn't really hurt -- just sore.    I sure hope they don't open that entire incision...  that sounds like it would hurt!

No I didnt have my revsion from band to vsg open.   My surgeons use staples on all their surgeries.  I guess all surgeons are different.
