showering after surgery

I took a shower 2 days after surgery while I was still in hospital.  The nurse put this big somewhat sticky plastic "bandage" (it's called something else) over the middle of my stomach.  She wasn't concerned about the incisions, but said the drain port needed to be kept dry.

Once I was home (drain was removed prior to discharge), no limitations on taking a shower.  My incisions all had surgi-strips and I was just told to let them fall off by themselves. Only limitation was no submerging in hot tubs, baths, etc.  Don't remember what the timeframe on that was though.

How is showering right after surgery and after discharge? Can you shower like normal? (My surgeon said I would not have any drains.) How do you take care not to get the incisions wet?
Thanks a bunch!

I showered as soon as i got back from recovery.  Vaguely remember it but I did.  No big deal..
