VSG works for Pescatarians? (vegetarians who eat fish?)

Hi all, I was wondering if there are any Pescatarians around and if there is any issue for people who don't eat any kind of meat besides fish to do a VSG.

I do eat lacto-ovo meals (dairy and eggs)

Does fish/shrimp etc digest well for VSG? (I heard shrimp and calamari do not work that well for lap-bandsters)

Thank you, appreciate your comments

Yep, it works fine.

Scallops are my favorite, tilapia, mahi mahi, are usuals on my menu. I'm not a fan of shrimp or lobster because it's a texture thing in my mouth. But, the few times I've tried to convince myself that I'll like them, I have zero issues eating shrimp or lobster.

Yes indeed! I can't eat shellfish because of allergies but it's such a good form of protein. I DO eat a lot of fish, especially tilipia. I'm not a vegetarian however, but there is a vegetarian who will probably weigh in (weigh, heh heh) soon. I'm not sure if he eats fish or not but he does follow a vegetarian diet. Lots of sleevers eat shellfish. I'm not sure when people are cleared for it post surgery (each surgeon has their own schedule), but it won't be forbidden for very long.

Hey thanks USAF Wife and Jeanette, very helpful info! This is my second question in a few hours - I will probably be bombarding the VSG forum with questions in the next few days as I am trying to make THE decision ;) Thanks again.

I do lots of shrimp, scallops, haddock, crab meat, I have done lobster. I have never had any problems. Actually I find it a lot easier to eat then most red meats.

I do eat some meat but not much.  I much prefer beans and cheese, veggies, etc.  Today tuna salad Mexican Style.  What bandsters have issues with, we don't.  They have a whole different anatomy and they have many food intolerances.  Don't worry about their stuff, it doesn't compare to us.

Thanks guys! Yes, I am still thinking band-wise as I just decided to change surgeries this week. So up to now I was reading mostly about lap-bands.

Good to know, it seems a Pescatarian wouldn't be that happy with a band.

I don't think I can eat fish everyday either, so I am a bit worried where would I get my protein from besides the shakes...

I was ovo-lacto pre-op and decided to add fish to my diet post op to make the low carb/high protein thing easier. I love scallops, crab cakes, tuna salad, salmon. I have also had Tilapia. I do not like the texture of shrimp but they digested OK when I tried them. I also eat a lot of eggs and cheese (go Babybels!) Good Luck!

Thanks Dancin Girl! I totally understand you, without fish the low carb/high protein would be too difficult. I guess I got to this situation by being mainly ovo-lacto :/

So I guess in your case it has been possible to maintain a normal level of vitamins in the body by eating mainly ovo-lacto plus adding fish a few times a week (it's hard for me too to have fish every single day)

all my levels have been good except a low vitammin D, I am now on a vit D supplement plus my normal bariatric vitamins. some of my other staples are cottage cheese, eggs, morningstar farm veggie sausage, bacon or burgers. Some of their products are higher in carbs so check the package. I have also eaten peanut butter and of course I still love tofu and have  it about once a week. Good luck...:)
