Does the barium swallow contain iodine dye?
Hey OH,
I was wondering if you guys can help me with this question. It's been on my mind for so long and am worried. I have had a very bad reaction to the iodine dye in the past. I was told that i was allergic to it ... No sea food here!! I know that they need to check for leaks like after surgery. So here is the scary question,
does the barium swallow contain iodine dye?
I hope i get some good answers here. Thanks!

Lisa, I am a radiology technologist and I know as a fact that the swallow studies that we do are an iodine based drug.....it is an omnipague contrast solution. HOWEVER, when patients are allergic (as I am myself) there is a alternative med that works just as well (although very gross!! lol) called gastrograffin. This is what I was given for my study and had not problems....but, Im telling you that it tastes aweful. Now, WE dont use barium for or POST OP (immediate, or next day) patients...............but, BARIUM does NOT have iodine, so, if you facility truely uses it, you will be safe. If theres any question, just let them know about your allergy, they will be prepared.
Good luck! (btw, i used listerine pocket mist immediately after the test to kill the taste and i was cool...just a lil tip)
