Not to make you nervous, but I had A LOT of nausea after the surgery.  I dry heaved like crazy for two days.  I thought for sure that my staples were all going to rip out, but they held strong.  The important thing though was that it was way better on the third day and I only dry heaved one more time.  I don't think most people experienced nausea anywhere like I did though.  The reason why I'm telling you about it is not to make you scared, but so that you know that I went through it and it did go away.  In my head I was thinking that I would be nauseated for the rest of my life!  Hopefully you won't experience that though.

As far as pain, I just had a sore tummy like I'd done too many sit-ups.  My surgeon does inject a long lasting anesthesia in the incisions, but he didn't give me narcotic pain meds after.  The pain wasn't bad at all.  I would use the electric head up/down button on the hospital bed to get from a sitting to laying down or vice versa position though.

I was pretty weak for a while after the surgery, but not like I couldn't get around at all.  I went to the movies and to the mall, but not walking all around the mall by any means.

Best wishes with your surgery and recovery, it's a wonderful thing!!

There are so many different responses to your question, I can only tell you about my experience. The first 2 days were not so wonderful, but I was up walking and drinking liquid on the 2ND day after my upper GI to make sure I didn't have a leak. Upper GI was uncomfortable, but doable. The day I went home was the last day I took pain meds. But this is my story, and so many others have different stories. I went home on full liquids, plain Greek yogurt, protein drinks, protein puddings, egg beaters, cottage cheese, and instructions to drink as close to 64 oz as I could. I will say it was tough because its new and healing, warm liquids worked better for me, I got in about 250 to 300 cal that first week per day and about 48 to 55 oz liquid(your protein drinks are included in that liquid count,oh and I got in about45 to 50 grams protein. the next week got better, I got more of the requirements in. Then after post op visit they put me on meat, I need to shred in food processor, and it got difficult but is becoming easier. I will be on this diet until May 12 when I see the nutritionist. I have had a few tough moments, anxiety about eating enough, and my best advise is to remember EAT SLOW, STOP IF YOU FEEL DISCOMFORT. If a food doesn't agree with you don't eat it again for a few weeks. It's a slow process and a slow learning about yourself process. There are some truly wonderful people here that will be able to add so much more to what I have told you, and they are so supportive, and knowledgeable about everything. I wish you a quick and easy recovery. I did forget to tell you that you would feel really weak. body tired.

First of all, congratulations to you both on your surgery Wednesday! Everyone seems to be a bit different. I had no nausea whatsoever and could practically guzzle water from that first day on (I didn't try to do so but I had no problem getting anything down.) I stayed on clear liquids for the day of surgery and the day after (water, juice, broth) then moved to full liquids for a week (protein shakes, pudding, cream soups, etc.) I had a very easy time. Not much pain at all and it was easy to get in all of my protein and water. Some people do have a more difficult time at first but it does get easier each day out. Just take it easy. Walk, sip, rest and then repeat. Be good to yourself and enjoy the journey! Keep us posted on how it goes. I'll be sending prayers your way for an uneventful surgery and speedy recovery!

I am a week and a half post op and it really was not bad for me. I was up walking the day after in the hospital hall. I also had the dry heaves but it was do to the liquid pain meds. I still have a stinging pain near one of my incisions but no other real pain. I don't move to pureed food until Wednesday so I will see how that goes. The one problem I have is constipation. So please if you see it is 4 days post op and you still have not gone, get something!! I will be praying for you.

i had some slight nausa the hurses gave me medication for that as soon as  asked for it and if I couldnt have one because it was to soon they just gave me another anti nasua medication, other than that I was scared to drink,  and i was a fool when i was allowed to drink on the 2nd day after surgery i did great I started slow to see if my tummy could handle it and it did.

your doctor might have you start a liquid diet for two weeks and then you will slowley build yourself up to thicker textures. your doctor should tell you this after surgery.

im so glad i had the surgery! everyone rates their pain differentlly and I was giving a pain pump that did NOTHING FOR ME, I told the nurses and they gave me demorol which was awesome! i felt better. your doctor will also make you walk after surgery, about a few hrs after, to help with reducing possible blood clots.  your doctor may have you on a drain tube as well, but not all doctors do this, so really everyone experiences something different.

everyones surgery is different, however you as the paient have every right to get those nurses to control your pain medication so you can be as comfortable and as vomit free as you can be, other than that, its really not that bad and on the 3rd day you will feel much better after surgery.

surgery was a first time experience for me. When I woke up I had a pain in my belly but also had an interesting pain in my left arm. Never expected to  feel that and wasnt ready for it. The pain was from the gas they inserted in the abdomen. They never told me about that. So to rid the pain I needed to get rid of the gas. Milk of magnesia was my best friend. Best luck to all of you having surgery soon and see you on the losers bench.
